Real top football's rich list, United down to third
LONDON • European champions Real Madrid displaced Manchester United as the world's highest-earning football club after the Premier League side's underperformance on the pitch in recent seasons ate into their dominance off it.
United slumped to third place, below both Real and Barcelona based on revenue for the 2017-18 season, financial services firm Deloitte said in its annual Football Money League yesterday.
The Red Devils have been the wealthiest club for two of the past three years and eight times in the last two decades.
Clubs in the Premier League - which has the highest broadcast revenue - took six of the top-10 spots, but LaLiga's two biggest teams prevailed thanks to their Champions League prowess and supremacy at home.
The changing of the guard in football's financial list mirrors the contrasting on-field fortunes of United and Real of late. Santiago Solari's men have won the Champions League for the last three seasons while, in the same period, United have failed to get past the last 16.
Their annual revenue was also hit by a slump in the British pound, growing only 1.5 per cent to £590 million (S$1 billion). Real, on the other hand, surged 11 per cent to €751 million (S$1.1 billion).
A spokesman for United said the club were "not too concerned" about financial league tables from year to year as the team remain a top global sports brand by any measure.
Part of their confidence lies in the fact that the Premier League still dominates the money pile.
There are a further five English top-flight teams in the top 10, including Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal, with even relegation-threatened Newcastle making the top-20 cut despite going trophyless since 1969.
Tottenham, who are waiting to move into a 62,000-capacity stadium, re-entered the top 10 for the first time since the 2006-07 term.
Italian Serie A champions Juventus, meanwhile, dropped out of the top 10 for the first time since the 2010-11 season despite signing former Real talisman Cristiano Ronaldo in the close season.
Weaker broadcast revenue in Italy relative to other big European leagues means Juventus have to do better than their rivals in the Champions League to bridge the gap.
Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain, who are backed by wealthy Middle East owners, are in fifth and sixth place.
Both are, however, facing claims they have breached the Financial Fair Play regulations, but City and PSG have denied any wrongdoing.

LONDON • The English Premier League could have an unusually intense battle for fifth place next season if Manchester City are banned from European football for breaking Financial Fair Play rules.
Uefa sources have confirmed that England would retain four Champions League places if City are excluded from the competition in 2020-21, which was the recommendation of the investigatory chamber of Uefa's club financial control body (CFCB) when the Premier League champions were formally charged last week.
Given that Pep Guardiola's side, who sealed a domestic treble with victory in the FA Cup final, are almost certain to finish in the top four next season, their Champions League place would pass to the team who are fifth in the Premier League, should they be suspended.
The allocation of Champions League spots is in the hands of the Football Association, but there is no prospect of a place being given to the FA or League Cup winners.
Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester United have qualified for the Champions League despite finishing below fourth in the Premier League in recent years as a result of winning European competitions, but no English team have qualified by finishing fifth.
The FA Cup winners are theoretically rewarded with a place in the Europa League. However, after City's emphatic 6-0 win over Watford at Wembley last Saturday, the extra spot for next season has gone to Wolves, who finished seventh in their first season in the Premier League since 2012.
City has strongly denied the charge of falsely declaring a £59.5 million (S$104.2 million) payment from its holding company as a sponsorship deal from Etihad Airways to circumvent financial fair play regulations in 2015. Their fate is to be decided by the adjudicatory chamber of the CFCB.
The club will be granted a personal hearing by Uefa at its headquarters in Nyon, Switzerland, presided over by the CFCB chairman Jose Narciso da Cunha Rodrigues, who was formerly a judge at the European Court of Justice.
A date has yet to be set for the hearing. However, it is not thought to be imminent and, with City planning to appeal if necessary, there is no chance that there will be a Champions League ban in place by the beginning of next season.

Football: Careless United undone by Messi double as Barca cruise into semis
BARCELONA (AFP) - Lionel Messi pounced on two Manchester United mistakes to score twice and end their hopes of another Camp Nou comeback as Barcelona breezed into the Champions League semi-finals on Tuesday (April 16).
After an excellent start, United were undone twice in four minutes by Messi, who first nicked the ball off the careless Ashley Young and then watched as a weak shot from distance squirmed underneath David de Gea.
Philippe Coutinho, in perhaps his best performance of the season, added a third with a curling effort into the top corner and by the end, an outclassed United might have been relieved the score was not more traumatic than 3-0, 4-0 on aggregate.
A dizzying opening spell, in which Marcus Rashford had hit the crossbar, was long-forgotten, even if it could offer Barcelona's next opponents some encouragement.
Liverpool, who take a 2-0 lead to Porto on Wednesday, are the most likely obstacle between Barca and their first Champions League final since they last won this tournament in 2015. Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane might feel encouraged.
Instead, United's pair of early errors made this another night about Messi and ensured any faint hopes of repeating the comeback against Paris Saint-Germain, or even the famous 1999 rescue act against Bayern Munich, on this same pitch, were dashed.
Messi now has his 109th and 110th Champions League goals and, potentially, three extra matches to reduce the gap on Cristiano Ronaldo's 126, after Juventus were dumped out by Ajax. Barcelona's fans celebrated that too.
United's coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer had urged his strikers to be more lethal here but it felt ominous that even before kick-off, Rashford, Anthony Martial, Romelu Lukaku and Alexis Sanchez had hit 42 goals this season, while Messi on his own had 43.
Around an hour before kick-off, Alex Ferguson was on the side of the pitch, shaking hands with Ryan Giggs and sharing words with Solskjaer, the scorer of that goal against Munich here 20 years ago.
They could have hardly have asked for a better start. United were brilliant for eight minutes and could have been ahead within 30 seconds as Rashford raced onto a curving Paul Pogba pass and toed away a shot, which Marc-Andre ter Stegen bravely left to graze his own crossbar.
Barca were flustered, so much so the crowd even cheered with relief when Arthur Melo played his team's first convincing pass.
Then, Barcelona had their own eight-minute flurry as United almost conceded a penalty, ruled out after Fred took the ball before bringing down Ivan Rakitic, and then did concede, twice, to Messi.
Both could have been avoided, even if Young's turn on the edge of his own box was punished in devastating fashion. Young lunged in to atone for his mistake but Messi skipped away from him, poked it through Fred's legs and then whipped the ball past into the corner.
The second was simpler. Fred and Scott McTominay closed in on Coutinho and the ball spilled out to Messi, whose dribbling shot with his right foot should have drawn a routine save. Instead, De Gea let is squirm under his body for 2-0.
Pogba lashed out at the increasingly influential Arthur and Barca could have had a third before half-time, De Gea scrambling across to save on the line when Sergi Roberto should have finished.
Messi could have had his hat-trick too after Luis Suarez found him with a superb cutback and there was an almost comical sequence in the second half when the Argentinian played with his United chasers before finally being bundled over by McTominay.
Rashford might have made it interesting if he had controlled Pogba's ball over the top but Barcelona were in exhibition mode, helped by a vintage Coutinho curler after he had cut inside from the left.
Messi even attempted a bicycle kick and there were celebrations from the home fans when news went round that Ajax had taken the lead in Turin. They believe this is their year.

Spurs win to extend perfect run at new ground
LONDON • Amid all of the excitement at Tottenham's upcoming Champions League semi-final against Ajax, their target for this season still remains a top-four finish in the Premier League.
And they remained on course for a fourth consecutive year in European football's premier club competition after a 1-0 victory over relegation-threatened Brighton on Tuesday, ensuring their record at their new stadium remains unblemished, with four wins in as many games and no goals conceded.
They left it late though, with just two minutes remaining on the clock when Christian Eriksen got on the ball, while probing for the solution, as he had done all evening.
But on this occasion he arrowed a low drive that ripped past 17th-placed Brighton's defensive shackles before finding the bottom corner.
Despite not having scored in the league since March 9, this looked like being a night when what Brighton did at the back would fire their survival hopes until Eriksen's breakthrough.
So post-game, Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino appeared keen not to be drawn into a discussion about his contract extension.
Come the summer, the 27-year-old Denmark midfielder will have only one more season left on his deal, with Real Madrid said to among his many suitors.
Praising his match-winner as a "special person", he said: "It's a very special situation, we're all different. Timing for him and the club, and agreeing something are maybe different to other players. I hope he will be here in the future.
"Christian and us are so close, and it's not long until the end of the season. Now it's about being focused on the end of the season."
The Argentinian also praised his side's maturity in difficult circumstances, adding: "The team are not as fresh as we wanted, not just legs, but minds, so we have to congratulate the players.
"I'm so proud of them. Brighton were a really brave opponent. The most important thing is we believed, we didn't give up and we tried different ways to score. It is three very important points and to be in a good position in the table."

Pochettino 'happy' there's less focus on Spurs, Football News

Football: Solskjaer unimpressed as United ease past Reading in FA Cup
MANCHESTER, England (REUTERS) - Manchester United produced their least impressive performance under interim manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as the Norwegian offered rare starts to some out-of-favour big names in Saturday's (Jan 5) FA Cup third round win over second-tier Reading.
Belgian striker Romelu Lukaku, handed his first start under Solskjaer, took his chance with United's second goal just before halftime after Juan Mata's penalty put the hosts in front.
But with nine changes to the side that beat Newcastle United in midweek, United's fourth straight Premier League win since Solskjaer replaced sacked Jose Mourinho, it was an unconvincing display against a side second-bottom in the Championship.
"You can't ask for more than going through but the way we played wasn't the best," said Solskjaer, who matched Matt Busby's record of winning his first five matches in charge.
"They controlled it in the first five minutes and we weren't up to speed. But we made nine changes, and they hadn't played together as a unit so I made it hard for the boys.
"But we got the goals and managed to get through."
United's resurgence under Solskjaer has hoisted them to within six points of fourth-placed Chelsea in the Premier League.
Â
Yet Solskjaer said his side would need to be much sharper when they face third-placed Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley next week - his hardest match since taking over.
"We have performed a lot better, but you can't ask for fantasy football every time and with the changes I made you can't expect it to have the same flow and rhythm," Solskjaer told reporters.
"We are going to have some days to recover and then train hard because we know that if that performance is repeated at Wembley against Spurs, we are not going to come back with a clean sheet and any points."
Solskjaer hopes Chilean Alexis Sanchez, like Lukaku handed his first start since the managerial change, will be available after being forced off in the 64th with a hamstring injury.
"I hope it's not going to be too bad - it's the same hamstring that he's been having trouble with but we'll see.
"Hopefully, he'll be okay for next weekend," Solskjaer said.
Solskjaer also offered United fans a first glimpse of Dutch teenage winger Tahith Chong as a second-half substitute.
"He did two or three good things, he got the crowd going, he is exciting," Solskjaer said.
"You don't run the game as a 19-year-old in your first appearance, but he got 30 minutes and I think he showed a few glimpses of what he can do. It was not like it was 4-0 and a party, so he did well defensively."

Football: Kane making 'fantastic' recovery, says Spurs boss Pochettino
LONDON (AFP) - Mauricio Pochettino says Harry Kane is making a "fantastic" recovery and could be back in action ahead of schedule following the ankle injury he suffered last month against Manchester United.
Kane was initially ruled out until March, but Spurs boss Pochettino said the England captain could feature in his side's Premier League match at Burnley on Feb 23.
"Now he is here, he is doing well, he is doing fantastic. You know very well we need to stop him every day because he wants to be ahead of his recovery," Pochettino said on Friday (Feb 8) ahead of Tottenham's clash with Leicester on Sunday.
"He's very optimistic and determined to play as soon as possible - it's unbelievable but he's doing well.
"If you see him he's nearly ready to play but we need to be realistic too and of course in between all the areas to take the best decision.
"He's so close to coming back again. Not for Sunday, not for Wednesday but we will see after."
Pochettino, whose side are third in the Premier League, five points behind Manchester City and Liverpool, spoke of his disappointment that their clash with Leicester has been moved to Sunday for television when Spurs face Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League on Wednesday.
The Argentine also said he felt it would be "tough" for Tottenham to move into their new stadium before the end of the season.
The club announced another delay to the grand opening earlier this week, confirming that the north London derby against Arsenal on March 2 will now take place at their temporary home of Wembley.
Spurs were originally due to move into their new 62,000-seater White Hart Lane stadium for the start of the current campaign.
The move has been put back on numerous occasions and now, with the Arsenal game confirmed as being played at Wembley, there are just five home games left.
Asked if he still expected to relocate before the end of the season, he said: "My gut feeling (is that) it will be tough but I hope and I wish to be in the new stadium."
Pochettino also denied that he and assistant coach Jesus Perez had a secret dinner date with David Beckham and Zinedine Zidane during the week.
With Beckham and Zidane both having played for Real Madrid and Pochettino heavily linked with the managerial post at the Bernabeu, the rumour mill was sent spinning when all were photographed leaving the same London restaurant on Tuesday.
"I was with Jesus and another person. We were three and there was a table. We met by coincidence with (Beckham and Zidane) and that is all there is to it," Pochettino said when quizzed over the incident.

Football: Solskjaer will use 'gut feeling' to pick Man United team for Barca
BARCELONA, Spain (REUTERS) - Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will let his "last little gut feeling" decide his starting lineup for Tuesday's (April 16) Champions League quarter-final, second leg against Barcelona.
Alexis Sanchez and Nemanja Matic were part of United's 22-man travelling squad as they look to overturn a 1-0 first-leg deficit.
Chilean forward Sanchez, who scored 47 times in 141 appearances with Barca between 2011 and 2014, has not featured since picking up a knee injury against Southampton last month, while Matic is recovering from a muscle injury.
United lost the home leg against Paris St Germain in the previous round 2-0 before turning the tie around in the French capital, and Solskjaer is hopeful his players can serve up a repeat at the Nou Camp.
"I think I'll be so focused, so concentrated," Solskjaer told the BBC.
"I'll have my last little gut feeling on who to play.
"Because against PSG I had a team in my mind when we travelled in the morning, walk out into the stadium, see the stadium and you say 'nah, I'll change, I need to do this, he needs to play' and it turned out ok."
The Nou Camp has an added significance for Solskjaer after he scored a stoppage-time winner in the 1999 Champions League final against Bayern Munich at the stadium in United's treble-winning season.
"That goal has been mentioned a few times, yes," the 46-year-old said.
"So many people have congratulated me and talked to me about that night. They say 'it was the best night of my life but don't tell my wife' - that kind of thing."
United's short-term target is to secure a Premier League top-four finish and qualification for the Champions League, but Solskjaer wants the club to compete for major honours next season.
He stressed it was important to have strong characters in the dressing room if United are to compete with Europe's elite on a regular basis.
"If you want to win, if you want to play at Man United you have to have a personality," Solskjaer added.
"You have to stand up for yourself against big boys because you're going to play against top players in the world and then you can't look round and always ask for help. We all have to step up."

Klopp wants angry reds
LONDON • Liverpool remain the only unbeaten team in the Premier League this season and 16 points ahead of tomorrow's visitors Manchester United but Jurgen Klopp knows better than most that form often goes out of the window against their fierce rivals.
Down the years, the biggest game in English football has always been a tempestuous affair, notably in 2015, when then captain Steven Gerrard was sent off for a stamp on Ander Herrera just 38 seconds after coming on at half-time.
While referee Martin Atkinson will again be taking charge of the game and is sure to clamp down on any transgressions, Klopp wants his players to show aggression without going over the top.
At his pre-match press conference yesterday, the German said: "We have to be angry on Sunday and we will be. We will fight for those points on Sunday."
The 51-year-old knows how heated rivalries can get, having been in charge of Borussia Dortmund for their "Der Klassiker" matches against Bayern Munich.
He added: "It's a big one! It is a very important game and it is very special.
"When I was back in Germany, I tried everything I could to watch it. Very often, it was very intense. Now I'm here, it's always tight.
"In Europe, we were good against them and I don't remember bad results too much."
His opposite number Jose Mourinho sought to gain a psychological edge ahead of his side's trip, noting that it was trophies in the cabinet that counted, not plaudits for playing style.
While Klopp has won widespread praise for his brand of "heavy metal football", he has yet to achieve silverware in his three years on Merseyside.
He has also yet to get the better of United under Mourinho, having not beaten them since the 55-year-old took charge in 2016, drawing three times and losing once.
The Portuguese made a sly dig at his pre-match press conference, saying: "Trophies matter, it matters, especially when you have the potential to fight for trophies and especially when you clearly say the objective is to win the trophy.
"Jurgen told already they want to win the Premier League (title), (that) is their objective."
He also suggested that structural issues at Old Trafford were to blame for his United team being a long way from playing in his image.
But, while Mourinho claimed that United were far from "living in an amazing house" and will travel without the injured trio of Marcos Rojo, Victor Lindelof and Alexis Sanchez, Liverpool have problems of their own, too.
While their issues, unlike the Red Devils' deep-seated ones, are relatively short term, they will have a direct impact on Klopp's selection as Liverpool will be without three defenders, two of whom are usual starters.
Joel Matip joined Joe Gomez, already ruled out for six weeks with a fractured leg, on the sidelines after breaking his collarbone against Napoli in their Champions League win on Tuesday.
Klopp bemoaned the injury that Trent Alexander-Arnold suffered in the dying moments of that same match, calling it "not top-class news".
"It's our situation. Crisis is only a crisis if you feel it," he said.
"Trent is not as serious as the other two boys. It was unlucky as well, like with Joel."
While James Milner can fill in at right-back with Alexander-Arnold set to miss at least two games, Klopp hinted that forgotten man Nathaniel Clyne could be in line to make his first league appearance since May.

Football: Real Madrid reappoint Zidane as coach to replace Solari
MADRID (REUTERS) - Real Madrid have reappointed Zinedine Zidane as coach on a three-year deal following the sacking of Santiago Solari, the club said on Monday (March 11), after the European champions' season collapsed inside a week.
"Real Madrid's board met today and decided to end the contract linking Santiago Solari to the club as first team coach and, at the same time, have offered to keep him at the club," Madrid said in a statement.
"The board have named Zinedine Zidane as the new coach to be incorporated immediately for the rest of the season and the next three, until June 30, 2022."
Frenchman Zidane won an unprecedented three consecutive Champions League titles with the club before resigning in May last year, with his replacement Julen Lopetegui sacked in October and Solari lasting just over four months in charge.
Madrid were eliminated from the Champions League in the last 16 by Ajax Amsterdam last Tuesday (March 5) after two Clasico defeats by Barcelona, knocking Real out of the Copa del Rey and leaving them 12 points adrift of the Catalan Liga leaders.
Solari, a former Real Madrid and Argentina midfielder who took over at the Bernabeu on Nov 13, had replaced former Spain manager Lopetegui but failed to bring success to the Bernabeu.
Real had won the Champions League for three straight seasons under Zidane but lost 4-1 at home to Ajax to go out 5-3 on aggregate, their earliest exit since 2006.
The 42-year-old Solari was in charge of Real for 22 games in all competitions, losing eight and drawing two, and helped the Spanish giants claim the Fifa Club World Cup in December.
Solari leaves Real third in the Liga standings, with Zidane's job now to keep them in the top four.
Barca beat Real 1-0 in the league at the Bernabeu on March 2 just three days after winning 3-0 in Madrid to knock their arch-rivals out of the Copa del Rey in the semi-finals.
Â
Â
Solari's side thrashed Real Valladolid 4-1 on Sunday (March 10) in his final stand as coach. Zidane, who won the World Cup with France as a player, is expected to take charge of training on Tuesday (March 12).
Zidane, who took over at Real in January 2016 after Rafa Benitez was dismissed, won the Champions League that season, before claiming a La Liga and European Cup double in 2017.
Five days after a third triumph in last season's Champions League final over Liverpool, the former Real Madrid midfielder decided to walk away, saying it was the right moment to depart.
The 46-year-old won nine trophies at Madrid and is considered a hero by supporters after managing Real in one of the club's most successful eras.

Real had won the Champions League for three straight seasons under Zidane but lost 4-1 at home to Ajax to go out 5-3 on aggregate, their earliest exit since 2006.
TOP FOUR

Football: Man City hit nine past Burton to cruise towards League Cup final
MANCHESTER, United Kingdom (AFP) - Holders Manchester City can look forward to defending the League Cup in next month's final at Wembley as Gabriel Jesus struck four goals in a 9-0 thrashing of Burton Albion in their semi-final, first leg on Wednesday (Jan 9).
Kevin de Bruyne, Oleksandr Zinchenko, Phil Foden, Kyle Walker and Riyad Mahrez were also on target against Nigel Clough's League One side as City ensured their visit to the Pirelli Stadium on January 23 is a mere formality.
After also thrashing Rotherham 7-0 in the FA Cup on Sunday with a much-changed side, Pep Guardiola was able to again hand a rest to a number of his key players but named a strong side with De Bruyne continuing his comeback from injury.
And the Belgian set the tone for the evening by heading City into a fifth-minute lead as he timed his run into the box perfectly to head home David Silva's cross.
Clough admitted before the game it would take a "miracle" for Burton to blunt the Premier League champions' might over two legs.
So it proved, but the visitors missed a glorious chance to get straight back on level terms when Marcus Harness blasted over Lucas Akins's cross when completely unmarked inside the penalty box.
It took City until the half hour mark to double their advantage, but a glut of three goals in seven minutes followed to put the tie to bed before the break.
Jesus headed home his first from close range after Bradley Collins had denied Leroy Sane before the Brazilian slotted home Silva's cushioned pass via the inside of the post.
City didn't need any luck, but still got some when Zinchenko's intended cross then looped over Collins to make it 4-0.
Other sides may have slacked off in the second period, but with competitions for places so fierce among Guardiola's side, the hosts were ruthless to match the Catalan's biggest ever win as a coach.
Jesus powered home a header to complete his second hat-trick of the season.
De Bruyne was then replaced by home favourite Foden, who was surprisingly left out the stating XI, just before the hour mark.
It took just four minutes for the 18-year-old to score his third City goal as he profited from the rebound after Collins did well to parry Jesus's first effort.
Jesus did soon have his fourth with a delicate finish from Sane's cross and City's dominance was summed up when right-back Kyle Walker strode forward to fire home his side's eighth of the evening.
Mahrez made it nine seven minutes from time and those City fans still in the Etihad cried for a historic 10th.
But that was the only thing City fell short of on the night with a final meeting against Tottenham or Chelsea on February 24 guaranteed.

Football: Veteran Quagliarella helps rejuvenated Italy thrash Liechtenstein
PARMA, Italy (REUTERS) - Fabio Quagliarella became Italy's oldest goalscorer as his double helped Roberto Mancini's rejuvenated side thrash 10-man Liechtenstein 6-0 in their second Euro 2020 qualifier on Tuesday (March 26).
Quagliarella, 36, netted two first-half penalties, while 19-year-old Moise Kean scored his second goal in his third appearance. Stefano Sensi, Marco Verratti and Leonardo Pavoletti also found the net.
Liechtenstein were reduced to 10 men on the stroke of halftime when Daniel Kaufmann was sent off for a handball on his goalline.
Italy, who have a maximum six points in Group J after a 2-0 win against Finland on Saturday, controlled the midfield through Verratti while Quagliarella set an example with his aggression.
The Azzurri, who are rebuilding under Mancini after missing out on the 2018 World Cup, broke the deadlock after 17 minutes as the 23-year-old Sensi's header from Leonardo Spinazzola's cross from the left found the roof of the net.
Verratti doubled the tally with a fine curled shot into the far side of the goal on 32 minutes.
Quagliarella scored his first goal from the penalty spot after a Nicolas Hasler handball, and his second after Kaufmann also used his arm and was shown a straight red card.
Christian Panucci was Italy's previous oldest goalscorer at 35 years 62 days.
Kean, who had endured a frustrating first half, headed home the fifth on 70 minutes with second-half substitute Pavoletti adding the sixth on his international debut, tapping in after Benjamin Buechel had parried the 30-year-old's header into his path.

Football: Pogba strikes twice as Man United win on Solskjaer home debut
MANCHESTER, England (AFP) - Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's instant impact as Manchester United interim manager continued in his first home game in charge as two goals from Paul Pogba helped his team secure a 3-1 win over Huddersfield.
After a resounding 5-1 victory at Cardiff, in his first game since replacing Jose Mourinho at the weekend, Solskjaer saw his team make it six points in five days over the Christmas period.
More significantly, the win and performance also maintained the positive atmosphere generated by the arrival of the popular Norwegian, who spent nearly 15 years with the club as player and coach before moving to his current club Molde.
The first Old Trafford goal of the Solskjaer era came after 28 minutes after a Pogba free-kick had deflected off Philip Billing and behind for a corner.
Marcus Rashford swung over a cross which was met by Victor Lindelof with a goalbound flick that Christopher Schindler cleared off the line, only as far as Nemanja Matic, unmarked at the far post, who steered in his first goal of the season.
United had dominated possession to the point, without unduly troubling Jonas Lossl in the visitors' goal, and Solskjaer's animated reaction on the touchline during that period showed his passion for the task.
It was a point not lost on the United supporters who had given their new caretaker manager a heartfelt welcome on his return to the club where his playing career ended in 2007.
Â
Solskjaer could not conceal the delight on his face as he strode down the touchline before kick-off, dressed in club blazer and tie, waving to supporters as he made his way to the dugout.
A banner proclaiming "20-Legend" - Solskjaer's shirt number in his United playing days - also made a return to the stands at Old Trafford, another reminder of the hero status the Norwegian holds at the club following his match-winning goal in the 1999 Champions League final.
But Solskjaer was not in for an easy afternoon. Huddersfield, who had moved bottom in the Premier League before kick-off, wasted a glorious chance after just 10 minutes, Terence Kongolo clearing the bar from six yards after a long throw-in by Billing.
And, when the visitors started the second half comfortably the more threatening of the two teams Solskjaer responded with an important double substitution that saw Ander Herrera and Ashley Young brought on.
Briefly, Huddersfield maintained their threat and a brilliantly-worked Alex Pritchard corner allowed Laurent Depoitre a 15-yard shot which David de Gea kept out with a magnificent, diving, one-handed stop.
That made the timing of Pogba's first goal all the more significant as he doubled United's lead just seconds later.
Rashford started the move with a darting 63rd minute run and pass to Juan Mata who reached the byline before pulling the ball back to Herrera whose square pass allowed Pogba to convert an accurate finish from 16 yards.
Pogba had only scored two Premier League goals in the same game on one other occasion - the derby victory at Manchester City in April that ranked as one of the highlights of Mourinho's time in charge.
But he would repeat the trick in Solskjaer's second game in charge, exchanging passes with Jesse Lingard after 77 minutes before beating Lossl with a spectacular right-foot finish from 25 yards.
Huddersfield at least claimed a late consolation as substitute Steve Mounie outjumped Pogba to head on an 88th minute Pritchard free-kick, setting up Mathias Jorgensen who slotted in from close range.

Luiz endured one of his sporadic, spectacularly poor performances against City last week, but he is one of Chelsea's few leaders and is capable of galvanising them.
Lukaku never scored for Chelsea and has lost his place in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's first-choice side, but has started both FA Cup games and set up two goals at Arsenal.
France's World Cup-winning midfielder Pogba has been a revelation for Solskjaer, despite his red card against Paris Saint-Germain. If he starts on the left of United's midfield trio or diamond, Kante should be positioned to follow his compatriot back.
Chelsea often struggle with the spaces either side of Jorginho when Kante is upfield.
Higuain is looking for a hat-trick after winning the Italian Cup in 2017 and 2018. He is the lone Chelsea player who should be spared criticism for the 6-0 thrashing at the Etihad, where he came close to scoring.
Lindelof could not cope with Kylian Mbappe's pace on Tuesday. He faces a very different test in the slower, bulkier Higuain.

Football: Solskjaer reminds Manchester United they will have to wait for next Premier League title
MANCHESTER (AFP) - Ole Gunnar Solskjaer admitted on Tuesday (April 23) that Manchester United will not be capable of competing for the English Premier League title next season in a stark assessment of the current gulf between his side and Wednesday's opponents Manchester City.
United take on City at Old Trafford 22 points behind the reigning champions and 24 adrift of leaders Liverpool, despite coach Solskjaer initially going a dozen league games unbeaten after succeeding the sacked Jose Mourinho.
Last weekend's 4-0 hammering at Everton was the third defeat in their five matches since and the 46-year-old called for patience when asked if he thought his squad was capable of competing for the title next season.
"I don't think we've got the consistency to do that," said the former United striker.
"Over the last 18 games, we're not far away from them but it's doing it over the course of a season.
"We've done it for half a season now. Let's see. You can never say never."
United were last crowned champions in 2013, and Solskjaer added: "You cannot expect things to happen overnight and we know that. It will happen gradually and we have to be realistic enough as a club that we have to take it step by step.
"That's not changing 10 players now and bringing 10 players in. It's slowly, slowly but surely.
"It has to be the right quality, right personality, the right standards to get us back to where we want to be."
Solskjaer has often spoken at length of the need for his players to take personal pride in playing for one of the world's biggest clubs, and following their recent rotten run of six defeats in eight matches in all competitions, he also said that the pain of falling behind United's two major local rivals was acute.
"For me, the motivation is towards something, to win something yourself," he said.
"We have to want to overtake them, not because it's City and Liverpool. But of course because it's City and Liverpool, for a supporter as I am, and as a manager now as well, because they're so close in the vicinity as well, we want to be the best.
"We have been the best, and it's not nice seeing those two at the top," he admitted.
Solskjaer's emotional post-match response at Goodison Park saw him warn some of his under-performing stars that they will not be at the club long-term.
"I think now is not the time to make drastic changes, but of course we do plan ahead... we know who we want to bring with us," he said.
"There are many of these players who will stay at the club for so many years and be successful, and I'm going to do everything I can to be successful and hopefully these players can come out with a response the next four games.
"But we're still planning long term, and that's just natural. That's the cycle of a team, that it changes."

Football: Eriksen strike gives Spurs last-gasp Burnley win
LONDON (REUTERS) - Tottenham Hotspur substitute Christian Eriksen scored in added time as they snatched a 1-0 win over Burnley at Wembley Stadium to stay within five points of leaders Manchester City in the Premier League.
Sean Dyche’s Burnley side looked to have secured a crucial point in their fight to move clear of the bottom three but Eriksen broke their hearts with a clinical finish for third-placed Spurs in the 91st minute.
The Dane was relieved to have broken his goal drought after scoring for the first time in the Premier League since April as Spurs made it 10 wins in their last 12 league games to keep alive their title challenge.
“Every time you come on you want to make an impact. To score in extra time was extra nice,†Eriksen, who came on in the 65th minute, told Sky Sports.
“Any goal if it is your first or number 20 is always very important and it is nice to score.
“Getting in a flow like we are now feeds confidence. We are in a good situation and feel confident going into any game.â€Â
Eriksen’s winner completed a dream week for Mauricio Pochettino’s side who qualified for the Champions League knockout stages in midweek with a superb draw at Barcelona.
In the Premier League, they are just three points behind second-placed Liverpool, who face Manchester United on Sunday.
The win could have been a lot bigger for the London club but they came up against impressive Burnley goalkeeper Joe Hart, no stranger to Wembley having been England’s number one, who made his best save after 74 minutes from Erik Lamela’s low effort.
Tottenham continued to create the best openings and blew two great chances in the final 10 minutes when Son Heung-min and Dele Alli somehow failed to find the target.
But Eriksen ensured the home side came away with all three points a minute into injury-time when he was picked out by Harry Kane and fired the ball into the top corner.
“It is a very good week for us, a fantastic win for us today, it is so important to be focused and try to keep our energy,†Pochettino told the BBC.
“After the Barcelona game and qualifying for the next stage of the Champions League, it is difficult to find the way to perform like this. Today, I congratulate my players effort and the 50,000 fans. It was a late victory but so important for us.
“The character to always push to the end shows great belief and faith in the way we play. That pleases me the most.â€
