Emery urges consistency during season's final straight

LONDON â€¢ Unai Emery challenged a revitalised Arsenal to write their own history after they climbed to third place - two points ahead of Manchester United and Tottenham - in the Premier League with a 2-0 win over Newcastle.
Aaron Ramsey's first-half opener was followed by Alexandre Lacazette's strike in the game's closing stages at the Emirates on Monday to maintain their impressive progress under the Spaniard.
This is the highest position Arsenal have reached in the league since April 2017, highlighting their improvement since Emery replaced Arsene Wenger after last season.
They had 63 points in the Frenchman's final year, but Emery has matched that tally with seven games to spare to put the club in the box seat for a top-four spot.
It was also their 10th straight home league win, the first time they have done so since the 1997-98 double-winning season.
But, while Arsenal fans celebrated at the full-time whistle by taunting their spluttering north London rivals with chants of "Are you watching Tottenham", Emery urged caution ahead of "a very difficult away game" against Everton on Sunday.
He told Sky Sports: "We are making progress in the table, but we know it is difficult. Tottenham, Manchester United and Chelsea are going to win a lot of games in the last moment in the season and we also need to do that.
"We need to continue being consistent, continue being together and continue with a big mentality to learn when we need to struggle together to impose our moment in 90 minutes. It's a big challenge for us to continue in this way.
"Our target is very clear. We have created a big atmosphere here. We are in a good moment, a good mentality with the players."
The Spaniard also praised Ramsey, who will be leaving on a free transfer to join Juventus in the summer, for "playing with a very big performance".
He added: "Aaron is happy, he is helping us and we need that, with him scoring. Each energy from the players is very important for us and he is doing that. He is giving us his quality, energy, behaviour to push.
"We know and he knows we are in the most important moment of the season."

Pogba, who last week described Real as a "dream" club while speaking to the media on international duty, was praised by the Spanish LaLiga team's coach Zinedine Zidane during the weekend.
Zidane said that he liked Pogba "a lot", further fuelling speculation that the 26-year-old may one day leave Manchester for Madrid.
Speaking at a pre-match conference ahead of today's Premier League trip to Wolverhampton Wanderers, Solskjaer said: "I don't like to talk about other teams' players (like Zidane did with Pogba) but this is another challenge with international breaks. Players are available all the time.
"It's a different environment, it's more of a general talk and Paul is a very nice and polite man who answered a general question.
"Zidane is an icon in France, Zidane is a fantastic manager, he used to be a fantastic player - I played against him myself - and Paul has just politely answered that question (about playing for Zidane).
"Paul's happy here and he's going to be a big, big part. I've always said that you'd like to build your team around him and that hasn't changed at all."
Following his appointment last week on a three-year deal, the Norwegian - who expects his assistant Mike Phelan to also be given a permanent deal soon - has admitted that there have been plans to bring in a director of football at Old Trafford.
"Football has changed and the structure at football clubs has changed. That's just the way football goes," he said.
"Me and Ed (Woodward, executive vice-chairman) and Joel (Glazer, co-chairman), we are looking at how can this club be ran as smoothly and as well as possible.
"We'll see what the club will end up with and I'm happy talking and discussing football with knowledgeable people in the right positions.
"I'm feeling older and older, 46 is a good number. I think the demands of football nowadays means you've got to split responsibilities."
Solskjaer, who was roped in as caretaker manager in December, won his first match as permanent boss with a scrappy 2-1 league victory over Watford last Saturday.
Today's clash with Wolves presents yet another difficult task in United's top-four bid, having lost to the same opponents in the FA Cup quarter-finals.
When asked if there were lessons learnt following that defeat last month, Solskjaer said: "Quite a few and of course we have to (learn).
"Last time we didn't play well enough... If we turn up and don't perform to our level against a good team, we will not get the result we deserve."

The statue, a first for an MLS player, honours the former England captain who was the first big European name to join the league, boosting its popularity and paving the way for other global stars to make the leap.
Beckham won back-to-back championships in 2011 and 2012 during his six years and 98 appearances with the Galaxy.
"Our city, our home," Beckham said outside the Galaxy's home stadium, the Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, before their opener against the Chicago Fire.
"From day one when my family arrived in this city, we felt at home and for that we will be forever grateful.
"When I talk about LA Galaxy and when I talk about LA, I talk about it as family because it is a big family." The statue unveiling came a day after Beckham helped open a soccer field for underprivileged youth in downtown Los Angeles.
"Taking care of the next generation of soccer stars in this country is really important and we did it in a community that really needed support and a safe environment for children," added 43-year-old Beckham, his parents and wife Victoria among the audience.

Former Galaxy team mate Robbie Keane paid tribute to Beckham as a loyal friend and family man.
"The David Beckham the public know is a global superstar and icon throughout the world," said Keane.
"But the one I know is even better."
Retired NBA star Kobe Bryant also gave a video-taped tribute to the former Manchester United and Real Madrid midfielder Beckham, the owner of expansion side Inter Miami CF, which is set to join the MLS in 2020.
"He was the first truly big name to come to the states and really draw attention to the sport," said the former Los Angeles Lakers forward.

Football: Liverpool back on top as United go fourth

LONDON (AFP) - Liverpool returned to winning ways and the top of the Premier League table while Manchester United climbed into fourth place on Saturday (Feb 9) as English football paid tribute to the late Emiliano Sala.
First-half goals from Sadio Mane and Georginio Wijnaldum together with Mohamed Salah's 48th-minute effort saw Liverpool to a 3-0 win over Bournemouth at Anfield.
Victory meant Liverpool, who had been second on goal difference, leapfrogged Manchester City by three points ahead of the reigning champions' match at home to Chelsea on Sunday.
Meanwhile United's revival under caretaker manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer continued with an equally comfortable 3-0 win away to Fulham.
Liverpool had dropped points in successive 1-1 draws against Leicester and West Ham, sparking suggestions they were losing their nerve in a quest to end the club's 29-year wait to be crowned champions of England once again.

'CONVINCING' LIVERPOOL

Mane, however, eased the pressure with an early headed goal at Anfield.
Liverpool doubled their lead through Wijnaldum's delightful 34th-minute lob before Egypt striker Salah sealed victory with a curling shot.
"We knew we were not happy with our performance in the last two or three games," Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp said. "We want to play convincing football we want to perform.
"That was the reaction we wanted to show today," the German added.

In London, Paul Pogba scored two goals - including a second-half penalty - either side of an emphatic Anthony Martial strike, as United made it 10 wins in 11 game since former striker Solskjaer was put in temporary command.
Chelsea could regain a spot among the Champions League qualifying places against Manchester City.
But United, 11 points adrift of the top four when Jose Mourinho was sacked in December, are back in the hunt now.
"There are so many games left, but we hope to stay in the top four," said Solskjaer.
Arsenal inflicted more misery on Huddersfield with a 2-1 win away to the bottom-of-the-table club.
Alex Iwobi volleyed the Gunners into an early lead and Alexandre Lacazette made it 2-0 before half-time, with Sead Kolasinac's own-goal too late for the Terriers.
Elsewhere under-pressure Everton manager Marco Silva's return to Watford ended in a 1-0 defeat thanks to an Andre Gray goal.
Everton's loss was compounded when Kurt Zouma was sent off after the final whistle for complaining to referee Lee Probert.

CARDIFF CLIMB AS THEY MOURN SALA

An emotional week for Cardiff ended with a dramatic 2-1 win away to Southampton that saw them climb out of the relegation zone just days after the death of transfer-window signing Sala in an aeroplane crash was confirmed without him having played a game for the Welsh club.
The Argentinian's body was formally identified by an English coroner on Thursday, a day after it was recovered from an underwater wreckage in the Channel.
Cardiff wore special shirts embroidered with a yellow daffodil, the national emblem of Wales and the team colour of French side Nantes, Sala's former club, with a minute's silence observed prior to kick-off.

"It's been a tough couple of weeks," said Bamba. "I know Emiliano Sala was looking from up there so it's good to get the three points."
Burnley were in the relegation zone after Cardiff's win.
But they moved three points clear in a 3-1 late kick-off win at Brighton, Chris Wood scoring twice as Southampton were left in the bottom three.
London rivals Crystal Palace and West Ham drew 1-1, with Hammers captain Mark Noble scoring with a first-half penalty before Eagles striker Wilfried Zaha marked his return from suspension with an equaliser 14 minutes from time at Selhurst Park.
Third-placed Tottenham welcome Leicester to Wembley on Sunday, with in-form Wolves at home to Newcastle on Monday.

Napoli goalkeeper David Ospina out of hospital after head injury scare

MILAN (AFP) - Napoli goalkeeper David Ospina has been discharged from hospital and is recovering from his frightening collapse after a knock to the head at the weekend, the Serie A club announced on Monday (March 18).
The 30-year-old, who is on loan from Arsenal, will miss Colombia's international friendlies against Japan on March 22 and South Korea four days later after suddenly falling to the ground 41 minutes after receiving treatment following his collision with Ignacio Pussetto during Sunday's 4-2 win over Udinese.
"David Ospina was discharged this afternoon from the Pineta Grande Clinic where he had been admitted last night for a series of checks," Napoli wrote in a statement.
"Checks have ruled out any problem. The player was advised to take a few days of rest and will not respond to his call-up for the national team." Ospina's wife Jesica Sterling said on Instagram that Ospina "was much better" at home, "waiting for the shock to completely subside".
Napoli, meanwhile, are reported to have ordered an investigation into decisions taken by medics, who allowed Ospina to continue playing, and transferred him initially to the nearby San Paolo hospital where there is no neurosurgery department.
Ospina suffered "a hypotensive crisis resulting from a head injury," Napoli had said on Sunday, which is a sudden fall in blood pressure which can cause dizziness and fainting.
Ospina played for six years with French club Nice before joining Arsenal in 2014. He arrived at Napoli last August on a one-year loan with an option to buy.

Tampines Rovers trounced Hougang United 5-1 at Jalan Besar Stadium on March 3, when Hougang's Justin Hui was sent off in the 50th minute.
Yesterday, the two Singapore Premier League (SPL) teams served up another six-goal feast at Our Tampines Hub.
It was another red card early in the second half which opened up the game and, once again, Hougang left the pitch wondering what might have been.
The Cheetahs had to settle for a 3-3 draw, despite having twice led by two goals and an extra man after Stags midfielder Yasir Hanapi's red card in the 51st minute.
A frustrated Hougang coach Clement Teo said: "We took our foot off the pedal a little and, psychologically, we were not strong enough.
"We knew we were 3-1 up and playing against 10 men and, if we switched off, we would be punished by a team like Tampines."
The first half was akin to a cagey game of chess with both sides wary of making a mistake.
Hougang drew first blood through South Korean defender Kong Ho-won, who headed home from a corner in the 30th minute.
Following Yasir's second yellow card for a needless tug on Muhaimin Suhaimi, Faris Ramli made it 2-0 with a beautiful curler in the 56th minute - only for Shah Shahiran to reply a minute later with a shot that went in off the post.
Faris then restored Hougang's two-goal advantage in the 64th minute when he turned home Muhaimin's pinpoint cross for his eighth goal of the season.
But Tampines refused to roll over even with the numerical disadvantage. First, Zehrudin Mehmedovic swept home in the 67th minute before another substitute, Khairul Amri, completed the comeback in the 70th minute when he tapped in a cut-back by Jordan Webb.
On losing their two-goal advantage twice, Teo said: "Definitely, this is not something the players are proud of and neither am I."
Tampines coach Gavin Lee was "massively proud" of his charges, particularly after a difficult midweek AFC Cup game, where they beat Myanmar champions Yangon United 4-3 in added time.
"The second half was an emotional roller coaster but, as coaches, we have to stay calm and do what we have to," he said. "We came out with a plan to attack and, even though we were a man down, that strategy didn't change.
"We were confident in what we wanted to do, and we just had to take a little more (risk). To go toe-to-toe over 90 minutes with a fresher side is really good."
In yesterday's other match, Albirex Niigata beat Geylang United 2-0 to leapfrog Hougang into second place on 17 points, six points behind leaders Brunei DPMM.
Third-placed Hougang have 16 points while Tampines (13) are fourth.

CARDIFF â€¢ Before the match, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer spoke about how he will employ techniques used by former Manchester United boss Alex Ferguson to make full use of the talent in the squad, particularly in England duo Marcus Rashford and Jesse Lingard.
"Make these players play, you can't say it's an easy job, but it's a privilege to have that talent and make them express themselves," said the United caretaker manager.
Express themselves they did, and in emphatic fashion, too.
Rashford and Lingard both started and got on the scoresheet as the Red Devils gave Solskjaer the perfect start to his temporary reign with a 5-1 victory at Cardiff on Saturday, just days after replacing the sacked Jose Mourinho.
Call it coincidence if you like, but United scored five goals in a Premier League game for the first time since Ferguson's final game in May 2013.
"Football is easy if you've got good players," Solskjaer told BT Sport. "They are a great bunch of players and their quality is unbelievable."
And it was not only Ferguson whom Solskjaer drew inspiration from. The 45-year-old also revealed that a few words of encouragement from United's record goalscorer Wayne Rooney helped breathe new life into the stagnating club.

"I arrived on Wednesday night and had only Thursday and Friday with the players. Wayne Rooney texted me and gave me some advice - so it must be down to him!" said Solskjaer with a laugh.
"He told me to make them play football, enjoy themselves and be Manchester United."
Rashford opened the scoring with a free kick in the third minute and a goal from Ander Herrera just before the half-hour mark gave them a 2-0 lead.
Cardiff pulled a goal back through a Victor Camarasa penalty in the 38th minute, but Anthony Martial restored the two-goal margin minutes later and two goals from Jesse Lingard in the second half added gloss to the scoreline.
The Norwegian said he had worked on patterns of play and focused on getting full-backs Ashley Young and Luke Shaw to push higher up the pitch.
"Your work rate is the easiest thing to work on. It is free. It is the attitude and application of the boys," he said.
"If we approach all the games like this - and we want them to approach them all like this - with combination play and playing the ball forward, then I'll be happy."
Rooney was delighted to see how Solskjaer managed to get the United players, who had looked shackled and careworn under Mourinho, to feel liberated enough to attack with pace and panache.

THAT'S THE WAY TO GO

OLE GUNNAR SOLSKJAER, who is pleased with his team's positive play which gave him a thumping 5-1 win on his debut.

"It's a fantastic day for the club. Manchester United's a big part of my life and it was never nice watching what was going on," said Rooney. "The players obviously looked a bit restricted (under Mourinho). The players have ability and today we've seen that.
"A lot of things were happening around the team and around the manager, which isn't good. Ole's given them that freedom."
That was certainly evident from the comments of United's rejuvenated young players, who were not shy in noting how Solskjaer had given them far more licence to express themselves.
Lingard said: "The lads played with a lot of energy, enjoyment and excitement. When you've got confidence, you put yourselves in positions to score goals.
"That's what we did. We were playing higher and the full-backs were higher. We pinned them back and created a lot of chances."
Rashford added: "He (Solskjaer) wants us to be positive on the ball and always look for the gaps. That was just the start. We're going to improve and get better at it."
Victory also sees United close the gap on fourth-placed Chelsea to eight points, thanks to the Blues' 1-0 home defeat by Leicester earlier in the day.
"We're eight points behind, so our job is to take one game at a time," added Solskjaer, whose team host Huddersfield on Boxing Day.
"We always play well in the second half of the season."

The Argentinian strikerâ€™s body was formally identified by an English coroner on Thursday, a day after it was recovered from underwater wreckage in the Channel.

The plane carrying Sala from the French city of Nantes to Cardiff, his new club, disappeared near the British island of Guernsey on January 21.
Pilot David Ibbotson remains missing. His family have launched a fundraising campaign to find his remains.
Cardiff had been given permission by the Premier League to wear shirts embroidered with a yellow daffodil, the national emblem of Wales and the team colour of Nantes.

In a statement on Monday on the Globoesporte.com site, Pele said he had required â€œmedical assistance and surgeryâ€ for a â€œsevere urinary infection.â€Â
Pele, who won the World Cup with Brazil in 1958, 1962 and perhaps most memorably in Mexico in 1970 when his swashbuckling team re-defined modern football, has had several health scares in recent years.
On Wednesday, legendary Argentinian footballer Diego Maradona wished Pele well on Instagram, posting a picture of the two football greats in 1979.

LONDON â€¢ After surviving an early Sergio Aguero VAR penalty and top scorer Harry Kane's injury to beat Manchester City 1-0, Mauricio Pochettino challenged "spirited" Tottenham to finish the job in their Champions League quarter-final.
South Korea forward Son Heung-min took his chance well in front of 17,500 fans in the so-called Tottenham Wall to earn Spurs a slender first-leg edge 11 minutes from time in their new home, the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, on Tuesday.
His much-maligned captain Hugo Lloris enjoyed a moment of redemption in a troubled campaign when he saved Aguero's kick after Danny Rose was adjudged to have handled Raheem Sterling's shot.
Pochettino was delighted with the display against the Premier League champions, but insisted the tie was still delicately poised.
"We showed great quality. We were all excited and motivated to play this type of game," he said.
"The energy was good, fantastic, the penalty save gave us a big lift. There are still 90 minutes to play and it's Man City. But, with the spirit we play, anything is possible."
The win was an unexpected twist after Kane, who has 24 goals this season, injured his left ankle in a tackle on Fabian Delph just before the hour. He is expected to have tests on the injury today, but Pochettino fears his star striker could miss the rest of the season.
City's first loss since a Jan 29 setback at Newcastle may not be fatal, but they will have to improve at home in the second leg to stop Spurs from reaching their first European semi-final since 1984.
Pep Guardiola said: "Nobody said it would be easy. We have to show what we can do the next game.
"It was a good performance, but that's the Champions League. We lost, we have the second game and we will see what happens."
There was a sense of deja vu as he opted for the same duo, Fernandinho and Ilkay Gundogan, with disastrous consequences in the 3-0 beating at Liverpool in the first leg of the last-eight clash last season.
Guardiola lost Bernardo Silva to a muscle injury during training on Monday and had to defend his "conservative" line-up:

LONDON (REUTERS) - Manchester United's perfect record under caretaker manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has brought renewed hope to the club but qualifying for the Champions League will still be 'difficult', goalkeeper David de Gea has said.
Sixth-placed United have won all six league games since the Norwegian replaced Jose Mourinho to close the gap on fourth-placed Chelsea from 11 points to three, but they are still 16 points behind league leaders Liverpool who have 60 points.
"We're happy with the wins but we aren't satisfied with the overall situation. This is a club that should be fighting for the title," de Gea told Sky Sports.
"We want to get back into the Champions League places, which will be a difficult objective, but we have managed to reduce the points deficit quite a bit."
After advancing to the fifth round of the FA Cup at Arsenal's expense, United next host Burnley in the league on Tuesday (Jan 29) and de Gea is wary of their opponents who have won 10 points from their last four games.
"They're on a good run of results but we're playing at home, and we're also on a good run of form, so we're fully confident of winning all three points," the Spaniard added.
"They are dangerous and we know the kind of style they will use against us. They like to put you under pressure with long balls, and they're very dangerous at set-pieces."
United last beat Burnley at home in 2015 with the visitors earning a draw in the last two league matches at Old Trafford.

LONDON (AFP) - Claudio Ranieriâ€™s brief spell as manager of Premier League strugglers Fulham ended on Thursday (Feb 28) when the Italian was sacked after only four months in charge.
The 67-year-old Italian, who memorably guided Leicester City to the 2016 Premier League title, failed to ignite a Fulham revival after he replaced the sacked Slavisa Jokanovic in November.
He was in charge for just 16 league games but won only three, and Wednesdayâ€™s 2-0 defeat to Southampton left them second from bottom, 10 points adrift of safety with 10 matches remaining.
That loss at St Maryâ€™s was the final straw as Fulhamâ€™s travelling fans chanted â€œyou donâ€™t know what youâ€™re doingâ€ at Ranieri.
Former Chelsea boss Ranieri had been labelled â€˜risk-freeâ€™ appointment by Fulham owner Shahid Khan.
But unhappy Fulham supporters unveiled a banner at Southampton that read: â€œRisk free? Are you watching Tony Khan?â€, in a pointed reference to the Fulham ownerâ€™s son, who takes a major role in club policy.
â€œFollowing our discussion this afternoon, Claudio Ranieri agreed to my decision that a change was in the best interest of everyone,â€ Shahid Khan said in a statement.
Khan, whose investment of over Â£100million in new players in the close season after they were promoted to the Premier League has backfired spectacularly, said Ranieri behaved like a â€œperfect gentlemanâ€ during the talks.
â€œClaudioâ€™s tenure at Fulham didnâ€™t produce the outcome we anticipated and needed when I appointed him as manager in November, but be assured he is not solely to blame for the position we are in today,â€ said Khan.
â€œClaudio walked into a difficult situation, inheriting a side that gained only one point in its prior eight matches, and he provided an immediate boost by leading our club to nine points in his first eight matches as manager.
â€œThough we were unable to maintain that pace thereafter, I am grateful for his effort.â€ .

Last throw of the dice

Ranieri, who was sacked by Leicester months after their fairytale title success, said he was sad the good start the club had made under his charge had not been maintained.
â€œI am obviously disappointed with the recent results and that we could not build on the good start we made following my appointment,â€ said Ranieri, who took over at a time when Fulham had secured just one point from their previous eight matches.
The Cottagers were promoted to the Premier League last season with a reputation for free-flowing football, but that attacking style was exposed in the top-flight, with the clubâ€™s Â£100 million spree on new signings failing to deliver the required quality.
Former England midfielder Scott Parker â€“ who ended his playing career at Fulham â€“ is to be the caretaker manager in one last desperate throw of the dice from the west Londoners.
â€œScottâ€™s immediate assignment is merely to help us stabilise, grow and rediscover ourselves as a football club,â€ said Khan.
â€œIf Scott can answer that challenge, and our players respond to the opportunity, perhaps victories will follow in the months ahead.â€Â
Ranieri is the sixth Premier League manager to lose his job this season and comes just days after Claude Puel was sacked by Leicester â€“ Jokanovic, Mark Hughes (Southampton), Jose Mourinho (Manchester United) and David Wagner (Huddersfield) being the other casualties.

LEICESTER, England (REUTERS) - Southampton moved out of the relegation zone with a 2-1 win over Leicester City in the Premier League on Saturday (Jan 12) despite playing half the match with 10 men at the King Power Stadium.
Saints came into the contest having picked up four points in their last two Premier League away games, and found themselves in front after 11 minutes through James Ward-Prowse's penalty.
Their task was seemingly made more difficult when Yan Valery was sent off for a second yellow card just before halftime but Shane Long squeezed the ball home to double Southampton's advantage just before the break.
Leicester committed more bodies forward in the second period and soon got themselves back in the match through Wilfred Ndidi's scrappy goal in the 58th minute.
No team has given up more points from leading positions than Southampton this season, but they dug in and held out for another three crucial points.
The win moves Southampton up to 16th while Leicester followed up their humiliating FA Cup defeat by League Two side Newport County with a loss that sees them drop to eighth.
Despite beating Chelsea and Manchester City over the festive period, Leicester fans continued to voice their disapproval of manager Claude Puel, with signs held aloft demanding that he be sacked which the Frenchman said did not affect him.
"It's not my concern (fan protests), no comment," Puel said.
"I'm just focused and concentrating on my team.

SINGAPORE - In six months, Hougang United have transformed themselves from wooden spoonists to dark horses for the Singapore Premier League (SPL) title.
The Cheetahs, boosted by several key signings in the off-season, face an immediate test of their title credentials in their opener - five-time champions Tampines Rovers.
To boost a blunt forward line, which saw just 22 goals in 24 games last year, they have reunited Singapore international Faris Ramli and Croatian striker Stipe Plazibat.
The duo plundered 58 goals in all competitions for Home United in 2017 before spending last season abroad at separate clubs.
They have also brought in other Lions like Hafiz Abu Sujad and Afiq Yunos, and re-signed Zulfahmi Arifin after his one season with Thai side Chonburi.
The moves have had some touting Hougang as title contenders.
It is quite a turnaround, considering that Hougang were last in the nine-team SPL last year and have never finished in the top half of the league.
Their best results were finishing runners-up in the League Cup in 2007 and 2011.
Head coach Clement Teo is confident of ending the barren run, saying: "Looking at the players we have, we know we can win silverware. But we are also aware that no games have been played yet.
"On paper, yes, we look fantastic and I have no doubt about my players' capabilities. What we need to do now is to get them to work together, on and off the field."
The club have failed to deliver on pre-season hype before.
In 2016, they signed the league's reigning Player of the Year Fumiya Kogure, only to end up sixth out of nine teams. A year later, they roped in Philippe Aw, who built a stylish Home United team over two seasons and brought with him two key men, Zulfahmi and Azhar Sairudin. Again, the Cheetahs finished sixth.
While Teo is bullish this year will be different, he expects a difficult start against Tampines, and terms his team firm underdogs for the tie.
Tampines, seen by some as favourites for the SPL crown, thrashed defending champions Albirex Niigata 4-0 in a friendly two weeks ago, and then won 3-1 at Myanmar league and Cup champions Yangon United in the AFC Cup last Tuesday.
Tampines' strongest XI are almost unchanged from last season. Hougang midfielder Fabian Kwok says that while this consistency is beneficial, he believes that Hougang are better equipped against strong teams this term.
"Last year, we had good players and were competitive in many games," said the 29-year-old, who has been with Hougang since 2017.
"But we lacked the experience, and often lost by one goal to the top teams. This year, we've signed players who are established and they bring that experience we need."
Plazibat, who scored 25 league goals in 22 games for Home in 2017, stressed that the best chance of victory today is through their strength as a unit.
"We are aware of our capabilities (as players) but individual players don't guarantee you anything, you need a team," said the 29-year-old.
"We are very serious about wanting to start the season on a high, because it will be very difficult later on if we don't collect points early.
"My target this season is to win (silverware) with the team. If I score many goals along the way, that's a bonus."
