Football: Ole Gunnar Solskjaer admits his demands contributing to United injury pile-up

MANCHESTER (AFP) - Ole Gunnar Solskjaer believes the privilege of playing for Manchester United should be about the "survival of the fittest" as he deals with a mounting injury crisis.
Solskjaer had to make three first-half substitutions during Sunday's (Feb 24) 0-0 draw with Liverpool as Ander Herrera, Juan Mata and Jesse Lingard all hobbled off injured.
The Norwegian could be without 10 players in total for Wednesday's trip to Crystal Palace and acknowledged that at least some of the muscle problems suffered by his squad may be a result of the rising physical demands he is placing on them.
United's running statistics have increased significantly since Solskjaer replaced Jose Mourinho in December.
That has been a factor in a huge upturn in results, with 14 matches under Solskjaer bringing 11 wins and just one defeat.
"It's probably linked, yes," said Solskjaer. "But when do you make that change? Do you wait until pre-season and think you will change results by just not asking them to run?
"Or do we start now and show them demands of intensity and how we want to play?"
The caretaker manager has made a point of getting United to play the fast-paced attacking game for which they were renowned during much of Alex Ferguson's 26½ years in charge at Old Trafford.
"You have seen what I have chosen," he added. "We need to play as a Manchester United team. If you want to be a part of Manchester United, it's a survival of the fittest isn't it?"
Solskjaer acknowledged that the physical demands of a hard-running style may take its toll on some of the more experienced members of his squad.
But he stressed the importance of professionalism off the pitch, saying his players could prolong their careers.

"They are getting older aren't they, Juan, Nemanja (Matic), Ander. So it's about the preparation, the standards that you have to live up to on and off the pitch as a Manchester United player, and as a professional player in the Premier League.
"It's not just turning up, playing and training and then going home and doing all these little out-of-football activities that we have all seen too many players doing.
"I'm pleased with the way my lads have responded in that way, that we don't see too much of them outside football.
"That was a big part of my career - as long as you are a footballer and you play in the Premier League, make the most of it because suddenly you get these injuries and you are done."
Solskjaer, meanwhile, is confident that Romelu Lukaku will get himself into the right shape to rediscover his best form.
The striker, who has gone 10 games without scoring, admitted in December that the muscle mass he put on to help Belgium finish third at last year's World Cup has hampered his form at club level.
"I can understand why, when you go to a World Cup and see the teams you play, the physicality might take over in terms of your preparation.
"We ask our forwards to work at a higher intensity, to run in behind, but that's what he likes, so I'm sure he'll be fine.
"Muscle is not so difficult to get rid of. He's lean, but he's muscly. We'll get him in the box and scoring us goals, that'll be his job."

Football: Bayern demolish Dortmund 5-0 to reclaim Bundesliga top spot

MUNICH, Germany (REUTERS) - Champions Bayern Munich dismantled Bundesliga title rivals Borussia Dortmund 5-0 on Saturday (April 6), scoring four goals in a flawless first half to reclaim top spot and get back on course for a record-extending seventh straight league crown.
The Bavarians exploded into action and scored twice in the opening 17 minutes through Mats Hummels and Robert Lewandowski, adding two more from Javi Martinez and Serge Gnabry before the interval.
Lewandowski's strike meant the Polish forward became only the fifth player in Bundesliga history to reach the 200-goal mark and the first foreigner to do so.
The hosts, who drew 1-1 at Freiburg last week, stepped off the gas after the break and controlled the game before Lewandowski scored again in the 89th minute and Bayern moved up to 64 points with six matches remaining, one point clear of Dortmund.
The first chance, however, fell to Dortmund with Mo Dahoud hitting the post after a lightning quick break.
But that was the last Dortmund attack for a long time, with a glancing header by Hummels putting the host ahead in the 10th minute and highlighting their aerial superiority.
Things got worse for Dortmund when Dan-Axel Zagadou's backpass fell to Lewandowski in the 17th and the Bundesliga's leading scorer chipped it over keeper Roman Buerki and volleyed in.

Poland's Lewandowski, who has scored 21 in the league this season, was the first player to break the 200-goal milestone since 1987.
Buerki had to rescue his team again when Hummels and Lewandowski beat the Dortmund defenders in the air.
The keeper denied Thomas Mueller from close range in the 41st minute but could do nothing to stop Martinez's rebound that put the hosts 3-0 up.
Gnabry added another to kill off any hopes of a comeback by Dortmund, who badly missed their injured top scorer Paco Alcacer.
Lewandowski notched his 21st goal of the season and 201st in the Bundesliga to put the cherry on top of a big win for Bayern which made them title favourites once more.

Football: 'I made a mistake', says Pochettino, but he slams 'sloppy' Spurs

LONDON (AFP) - Mauricio Pochettino took his share of the blame for "sloppy" Tottenham's 1-0 Champions League semi-final first leg defeat against Ajax after admitting he used the wrong tactics.
Pochettino's side made a dismal start as Donny van de Beek put Ajax ahead after just 15 minutes at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Tuesday (April 30).
Ajax dominated the first half until Pochettino completely changed his game-plan by switching from a 3-5-2 formation to a 4-4-2 system.
Aided by the introduction of Moussa Sissoko for the injured Jan Vertonghen, Tottenham regained a measure of control without ever hurting Ajax with their long-ball barrage.
Pochettino conceded he had blundered with his game-plan, but the Tottenham manager was also angry with the lethargic way his players started the club's first European Cup semi-final for 57 years.
"Watching now of course I can accept it was a mistake the shape we used. But there were not too many options," Pochettino told BT Sport.
"I am not happy. But our lack of energy from the beginning made our game difficult. We were a little sloppy.
"It was not the shape that conceded the goal. Our approach to the game was not good. I am the manager so I have responsibility."

Tottenham were hamstrung by the absence of injured striker Harry Kane and suspended forward Son Heung-min.
But Sissoko's dynamic contribution and the return of Son for next week's second leg in Amsterdam give Pochettino hope they can still reach the final.
"After we conceded the goal, 25 to 30 minutes in, we started to be in the game. Moussa Sissoko provided good energy," he said.
"Second half we pushed them and tried to create chances. It was an even game in the second half.
"We are alive. It's only 1-0 down. We need to believe we can go there and win the game."
It remains to be seen whether Vertonghen will be fit for the return after the centre-back appeared to suffer a concussion in a clash with team-mate Toby Alderweireld.
Vertonghen went off for treatment, but was then surprisingly sent back onto the pitch by Tottenham's medical staff.
He looked groggy and on the verge of throwing up before being helped down the tunnel after signalling he couldn't continue.
Asked about the severity of Vertonghen's problem, Pochettino only said: "I didn't see him. Of course, we will assess him in the next few days."

LONDON (REUTERS) - Arsenal's Alexandre Lacazette is eligible to play in Thursday's Europa League last 16 second-leg clash against Rennes after his three-match ban was reduced to two games, Uefa said on Tuesday (March 12).
The French striker was shown a red card for a foul on BATE Borisov defender Aleksandar Filipovic in the last-32 first-leg match and was hit with a three-game ban by European soccer's governing body for serious rough play.
Arsenal appealed against the decision which was partially upheld and Lacazette's suspension was reduced to two matches, which he has already served.
"The appeal lodged by Arsenal FC has been partially upheld," Uefa said in a statement.
Lacazette missed the last-32 second leg against BATE which Arsenal won 3-0 and their 3-1 round of 16 first-leg defeat in Rennes.

Allegri reportedly eyeing Man United hot seat

Allegri reportedly eyeing Man United hot seat
LONDON • Massimiliano Allegri wants to be considered for the Manchester United manager's job when it becomes available at the end of the season.
Mauricio Pochettino, the Tottenham manager, remains United's first choice but other candidates, including the Juventus coach, have not been ruled out.
United are committed to conducting what club officials have called a "thorough and extensive" recruitment process to determine who should succeed caretaker manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
Allegri, 51, led Juventus to four successive Serie A titles and took the Italian club to the Champions League final in 2015 and 2017.
The Times of London reported that he is understood to have been taking English lessons and would like to work in the Premier League. The Italian is particularly keen on taking the job at Old Trafford, which is vacant after the sacking of Jose Mourinho earlier this month.
Diego Simeone, the Atletico Madrid manager, has also been mentioned as a possible candidate.
Solskjaer, meanwhile, has claimed comprehensive victories over Cardiff City and Huddersfield Town in his first two matches in charge, but it is understood that the chances of the Molde manager being given the job full time are slim.

SPEED MERCHANT
The speed is his strength. I'm going to work on his finishing. He just has to calm down a bit. He has a good shot from outside the box. Within the box he must work to keep calm.
OLE GUNNAR SOLSKJAER , caretaker manager of Manchester United, on his striker Marcus Rashford.

The Norwegian club have insisted that the former United striker will return to his role in May.
Striker Marcus Rashford has played well in Solskjaer's first two league games, scoring the first goal of his reign against Cardiff and nearly setting up Diogo Dalot for a goal against Huddersfield.
Still, Solskjaer believes that Rashford can improve and, having scored 126 goals for the club himself, intends to give some advice to the 21-year-old on how he can become more ruthless.
"The speed is his strength. I'm going to work on his finishing. He just has to calm down a bit," Solskjaer told Norwegian broadcaster TV2.
"He has a good shot from outside the box. Within the box he must work to keep calm and just aim to put the ball past the goalkeeper."
The 45-year-old is also expecting a far tougher challenge when United host Bournemouth in the league tomorrow and when they travel to Newcastle on Wednesday.
"With all due respect to Huddersfield, the two battles against Bournemouth and Newcastle will be more difficult," he said.
Paul Pogba, who had a turbulent relationship with Mourinho, has found a new lease of life under Solskjaer with two assists and two goals in his last two starts.
"He's very important for us and when he plays at his best, he can make the difference in every game," midfielder Nemanja Matic said of his teammate.
"He played very well against Huddersfield but I think that he can do even more. Slowly, game by game he can improve. It was very important for him to score some goals."

PORTO • An unstoppable force will meet an immovable object when Cristiano Ronaldo's Portugal clash with Virgil van Dijk's Netherlands for the inaugural Nations League title today.
While there is a rare international trophy at stake, just as fascinating will be the head-to-head battle between two of the finest players in the world - even if this is being played down on the Dutch side.
"We're not just playing against Cristiano Ronaldo," defender van Dijk said after Thursday's 3-1 extra-time semi-final win over England.
"We're playing against an amazing Portugal."
His coach Ronald Koeman agreed and said possession would be the best form of defence against Ronaldo at Porto's Dragao Stadium.
He said: "We know that, sometimes, it's impossible to defend well against Cristiano Ronaldo.
"The best thing we can do is to keep the ball because when we have the ball, he can do nothing in attack."
Van Dijk, who won the Champions League with Liverpool on June 1, was his usual impressive solid self against England, aware of where he needed to be before anyone else. He would arrive, unhurried, and the likes of Marcus Rashford, Raheem Sterling, Jadon Sancho and Harry Kane were duly dispossessed.
Statisticians Opta said no player has dribbled past van Dijk in his last 64 club games before the Nations League. Strong and quick, good in the air and relaxed on the ball, he is the complete defender.
"He deserves the Ballon d'Or," Koeman added.
Van Dijk himself played this down, citing Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi as favourite.
But it is not Messi but his great attacking rival, Ronaldo, that van Dijk will meet today.
Should Portugal retain their 4-4-2 formation from their 3-1 win over Switzerland, there is the mouthwatering prospect of the two matching up for 90 minutes.
Ronaldo, now 34, may not be quite as dominant as before but a magnificent hat-trick, his 53rd, against Switzerland took his side through to the final.
"A football genius" was coach Fernando Santos' view of his talisman while "little Messi" Bernardo Silva said: "We're used to this kind of thing, he's been doing it for ages. It isn't a surprise to anyone now."
The Portuguese media went to town with his return following a post-World Cup break, with the Correio da Manha newspaper declaring "The Return of the King" on its front page.
Captaining Portugal to a trophy at home would be another high point in Ronaldo's incredible career and would vanquish any lingering scars from the Euro 2004 final loss to Greece in Lisbon.
"It's the preparation, my work ethic. I still feel good despite being 34," Ronaldo told uefa.com. "The most important thing is your head, to feel motivated and happy, and to follow my path as a player, because I think I still have a lot to give."

Football: Skipper Kompany to leave Man City on a high after domestic treble, will be Anderlecht player-boss

LONDON (REUTERS) - Belgian defender Vincent Kompany said on Sunday (May 19) that he would be leaving Manchester City and joining Anderlecht as player-manager after helping the Premier League club to become the first team to win the English domestic treble.
“We’ve just seen the close of an incredible season. My 11th as a Blue. And I cannot believe I’m writing this but... also my last as a Blue,” the City captain wrote in an open letter to fans on his Facebook page.
“Man City has given me everything. I’ve tried to give back as much as I possibly could. How often does someone get the chance to end such an important chapter, representing a club with such great history and tradition, in such a great fashion?
“The time has come for me to go now.”
The 33-year-old central defender said in the second part of his letter released shortly afterwards that he would take up the role of player-manager at Belgian club Anderlecht.
“I choose to be grateful for the past but remain ambitious and driven for the future. For the next three years, I will take up the role of player-manager of RSC Anderlecht,” he added.

"It’s the most passionate yet rational decision I’ve ever made. As a footballer, I was born and raised at Anderlecht. Since the age of six, I have been one with that club. A history of 34 league titles, they are second to none.
“I want to share my knowledge with the next purple generations. With that, I will also put a bit of Manchester in the heart of Belgium.”
City crushed Watford 6-0 in the FA Cup final on Saturday to complete the unprecedented treble of league championship and both domestic cups, after which Kompany said they were the best team in the world.

He scored with a thunderous long-range strike to decide their penultimate league match of the season against Leicester, a key moment in their retaining the Premier League title.
“It’s cliche to say it but it’s also so true: without my teammates I would have never been here today,” he added. “We fought many battles together. Side by side. In good times and in bad. So to all of you, from the 2008-2009 squad to today’s domestic Treble winners: I owe you guys!
“A special word also to (manager) Pep (Guardiola) and the backroom staff: you’ve been superb. You’ve followed me through so much hardship. You made me come back stronger every time. Thank you so much.”

Qatar's Asian Cup heroes rewarded with lavish gifts

•DOHA • These are heady times for the Qatar national football team.
On the back of winning their first Asian Cup last Friday, Felix Sanchez's men have risen 38 places to 55th in the latest Fifa world rankings released yesterday.
Not only are Qatar enjoying their highest position in 26 years, they are now ahead of Mohamed Salah's Egypt and Africa Cup of Nations champions Cameroon.
The team returned home to a rapturous welcome from tens of thousands of ecstatic fans, including Qatar's ruler Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, who has reportedly rewarded the footballers handsomely for bringing joy to the people at a time of simmering political tension in the Gulf.
Qataris did not travel to the United Arab Emirates, which hosted the Cup, as the country is currently under a blockade led by its neighbours, including Saudi Arabia and the UAE, who have accused Doha of supporting terrorism - a charge it has denied.
According to an article published on Fox Sports Asia's website, which cited Iranian media reports and a now-deleted tweet by Iranian football writer Sina Saemian, Al Thani has lavished gifts on every player.
They reportedly included a London apartment, a £2 million (S$3.5 million) cash reward, a monthly salary for the rest of their lives, a Lexus car and a luncheon hosted at his royal residence.
While some have questioned the country's recent triumph, claiming it has come out of the blue, former Barcelona great Xavi Hernandez believes the Cup win was deserved as the Qatar Football Association (QFA) had kept the 2022 World Cup hosts "on the right track".
The former Spain midfielder, who now plies his trade in Qatar as Al Sadd's captain, told TV channel Al Kass Sport: "Now you see the results produced by the Qatari team. It is a great team now. I am proud to work with these young players.
"We must remember that the QFA has been preparing this team for years to win this title.
"The Aspire Academy project is the idea of Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad Al Thani and the idea is now achieving great success. What Aspire has done is to prepare a platform for the emergence of players that we currently see on the pitch."
Thirteen out of Qatar's 22-strong Cup squad had links with Aspire, and Xavi has been frequently seen helping out at the academy when he is not tied up with his club commitments.

LONDON (REUTERS) - Senegal striker Sadio Mane had his house burgled while he was playing for Liverpool in a Champions League last-16 first-leg match against Bayern Munich at Anfield on Tuesday (Feb 19), British media reported.

Football: Spurs title chances hit by Wolves defeat

LONDON (AFP) - Tottenham's Premier League title hopes took a major hit on Saturday (Dec 29) when Wolves beat them 3-1 at Wembley to end their winning run.
Spurs took the lead with a Harry Kane pile-driver in the first half but the visitors staged a ferocious comeback through Willy Boly, Raul Jimenez and substitute Helder Costa.
Mauricio Pochettino's team found themselves in the title picture thanks to five straight league wins and a mini-collapse from defending champions Manchester City.
With league leaders Liverpool not in action against Arsenal until later on Saturday, Spurs knew they had a chance to crank up the pressure on Jurgen Klopp's unbeaten side.
But Tottenham - who had scored 11 goals in their previous two festive fixtures, will be bitterly disappointed that they did not beat Wolves after dominating the first half.
The first few minutes of the match were scrappy as both teams looked for rhythm but Spurs gradually exerted control, Christian Eriksen and the returning Dele Alli probing for openings around the edge of the box.
The in-form Son Heung-min, with four goals in his previous two league games, was a constant threat with his pace and tried his luck from distance in the eighth minute after patient build-up play.

Kieran Trippier hit a free-kick into the arms of Wolves goalkeeper Rui Patricio after Kane was fouled and Eriksen then tested Patricio from distance.
Spurs were finally rewarded midway through the first half when Son fed Kane, who marauded forward down the right.
Just before he reached the edge of the Wolves box he checked back onto his left foot and hit an unstoppable shot into the far corner past the despairing Patricio.
But Tottenham were unable to add to their lead before the break and Wolves sporadically threatened, especially when Adama Traore was on the ball.
Traore was substituted with just over half an hour to go but the visitors were seeing more of the ball and the Spurs fans became increasingly edgy as the second half progressed.
Wolves, urged on by a sizeable travelling support, disrupted Tottenham's smooth passing game, denying their creative players time on the ball.
The equaliser came in the 72nd minute after a period of pressure from Wolves earned a corner.
Substitute Moutinho swung in the corner and Boly rose to head it past Hugo Lloris.
Kane was booked for diving as Spurs poured forward looking for an winner but Wolves scored again when Jimenez struck the ball right-footed from the centre of the box past Lloris in the 83rd minute.
Four minutes later they extended their lead as substitute Costa struck to leave Spurs with a mountain to climb.
The defeat leaves Spurs on 45 points after 20 games, with 15 wins and five defeats.
Liverpool had 51 points from 19 games before they kicked off against Arsenal while Manchester City, in action on Sunday, have 44 points from 19 matches.

Football: Dortmund drop more points at Bundesliga bottom side Nuremberg, with Bayern just three back

BERLIN (AFP) - German Bundesliga leaders Borussia Dortmund dropped more points in the title race on Monday (Feb 18), when they were held to a goal-less draw at bottom side Nuremberg.
They are now just three points ahead of second-placed Bayern Munich, the defending champions who won 3-2 at Augsburg on Friday, with their lead slashed from nine points after drawing their last three league games.
"That was definitely too little from us, we have to pick up points again," said forward Mario Goetze.
"They didn't make it easy for us by standing deep, but we must improve."
Even without injured playmaker Marco Reus, plus defenders Lukasz Piszczek and Manuel Akanji, this was another below-par display from the league leaders.
Nuremberg were hammered 7-0 at Dortmund last September, but this was a vastly improved display from the hosts and the draw was celebrated like a win on the home bench.
It was their first game under caretaker coaches Marek Mintal and Boris Schommers after both head coach Michael Knoeller and director of sport Andreas Borneman were sacked last week.
The hosts deserve tremendous credit for battling, as their captain Hanno Behrens twice went close to giving his side a shock lead but his first-half headers went over.
Nuremberg's goalkeeper Christian Mathenia, who made four saves in the first half from Goetze alone, repeatedly thwarted the visitors' attack, but Nuremberg's winless streak in the league has now been stretched to 16 games.
"No one gave us a chance going into this game, which makes me even prouder that we picked up a point," he said.
Having crashed 3-0 at Tottenham Hotspur last week in the Champions League last-16, first leg, Lucien Favre's team again failed to score and are now winless in their last five games in all competitions.

Football: Boateng set for shock Barcelona move - reports
MADRID (AFP) - Ghanaian forward Kevin-Prince Boateng is on the verge of joining Barcelona in a shock loan move from Italian side Sassuolo, according to media reports in Spain on Monday.
Catalan daily Sport reported that the leaders of La Liga had agreed a deal to take Boateng on loan until the end of the season with an option to make the move permanent in the summer.
Madrid-based sports daily AS claimed Barcelona would pay eight million euros (S$12.36 million) in the event of a permanent transfer.
The arrival of Boateng, 31, would provide much-needed cover for Luis Suarez up front in Ernesto Valverde's squad following the departure of Munir El Haddadi to Sevilla.
Born in Germany, the half-brother of Bayern Munich defender Jerome Boateng moved to Serie A last year after helping Eintracht Frankfurt win the German Cup. He has scored five goals in 15 games this season for Sassuolo.
The former Tottenham Hotspur, AC Milan and Schalke player has previously had a spell in Spain, with Las Palmas in 2016-17.

Football: Ali on target as Qatar stun Japan to win first Asian Cup

ABU DHABI (REUTERS) - Almoez Ali scored with a spectacular overhead kick for a record ninth goal of the Asian Cup to set Qatar on their way to a first continental title with a stunning 3-1 win over four-time champion Japan on Friday (Feb 1).
Ali's early goal took him past Ali Daei's 1996 tally and, combined with a 27th-minute strike from Abdulaziz Hatem and a late Akram Afif penalty, helped the Qataris make an emphatic statement ahead of their hosting of the 2022 World Cup.
Sudan-born Ali's record goal came after a protest by the host United Emirates FA into his eligibility to represent Qatar was dismissed by the Asian Football Confederation only a few hours before kickoff.
Japan finally found a way through a Qatar defence that had not conceded in six previous matches when Takumi Minamino scored in the 69th minute but the penalty condemned the Samurai Blue to their first defeat in an Asian Cup final.
The victory was celebrated wildly by thousands of Omanis who had turned out to support Qatar in the absence of their own fans, who were unable to travel because of a deep political rift with the UAE.
"Today we made history for our country, we need to be very proud about our achievement," said Qatar coach Felix Sanchez.
"This is one step more towards be ready for 2022 and represent Qatar as a very competitive team at the World Cup."
Japan, chasing a record-extending fifth title, started the brighter but it was the Qataris who drew first blood through the prolific Ali, who was later named Player of the Tournament.

Afif has set up most of Ali's goals in the UAE and he was again the provider in the 12th minute with a cross that found the striker in space with his back to goal close to the penalty spot.
There was still plenty of work to do but Ali took a touch off each foot to tee up the ball before angling it past Shuichi Gonda into the corner of the net with a bicycle kick.
The Afif-Ali combination nearly struck again a minute later but the Qataris did not have to wait long to double their lead.
Hatem, who scored the winner against South Korea in the quarter-finals, summoned up another magnificent strike, cutting in from the right before curling the ball past the helpless Gonda into the top left-hand corner.
The Japanese, who had weathered a first-half storm before beating Iran in the semi-finals, kept their composure but were simply unable to break through the compact lines of Qatar's defence.
Japan skipper Maya Yoshida clashed heads with Boualem Khoukhi on the hour mark, resulting in the big Qatari defender being carried off on a stretcher.
The Qatar defence looked less assured without him and Japan took full advantage when Yuya Osako played in Minamino and the winger chipped the ball over advancing goalkeeper Saad Al Sheeb.
Japan poured forward looking for an equaliser but, after reference to VAR, Yoshida was adjudged to have blocked Abdelkarim Hassan's header with his hand in the 80th minute and Afif calmly sent Gonda the wrong way from the spot.
"Our goal was to win the title, and so I'm disappointed and regretful we could not bring the Cup home to the Japanese people," Japan coach Hajime Moriyasu said.
"I always think the winning team is better so in that sense they were."

Football: Sarri blasts 'stupid' people in Chelsea's fight against racism

LONDON • Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri believes his club's battle to curb racist incidents in their fan base is a "fight against stupid people", following further allegations of anti-Semitic chanting by fans during the 2-1 Premier League win at Watford on Boxing Day.
A minority of the away end were reported to have chanted discriminatory remarks aimed at London rivals Tottenham Hotspur, who are known for their large Jewish fan base, during the clash at Vicarage Road.
Chelsea temporarily suspended four fans from attending matches earlier this month amid an ongoing investigation into allegations that Raheem Sterling had been racially abused during their league clash with Manchester City at Stamford Bridge.
Just days after that incident, European football's governing body Uefa also opened an investigation into alleged anti-Semitic chants heard during their Europa League game against Vidi in Hungary.
Addressing the latest unsavoury episode to hit Chelsea, Sarri told reporters: "I don't want to generalise because 99 per cent (of) our fans are really wonderful.
"In every community, there are some stupids."

Club chairman Bruce Buck also published an open letter to fans last week, blaming a "deeply unpleasant but vocal minority" for damaging the club's image.
While Chelsea's off-field image has been tarnished by the recent spate of events, Eden Hazard, 27, is doing his best to keep his side in the top-four hunt on the pitch.
The Belgium forward is having his best season in a Blues shirt and has been involved in 20 league goals in 19 games. His two-goal show against the Hornets helped his team establish a two-point lead over fifth-placed Arsenal.
He also dropped his biggest hint that he was ready to commit his future to the club and become "a legend like (Frank) Lampard, (John) Terry or (Didier) Drogba".
After scoring his 100th and 101st Chelsea goal, Hazard, who has been heavily linked to Real Madrid and whose contract expires in June 2020, said: "It means a lot. This amazing club is something I will never forget, but now, the fans, the players, we want more.
"I want to score more goals for this club."

Football: Barnes saves Leicester with injury-time strike at West Ham

LONDON (REUTERS)- Leicester City twice came from behind to grab a 2-2 draw with West Ham United at London Stadium in the Premier League on Saturday (April 20).
Jamie Vardy and then Harvey Barnes netted as the visitors refused to give in after Michail Antonio and Lucas Perez twice put the Hammers ahead.
The two mid-table sides both began in the unusual position of having equalled their points total of last season despite campaigns which promised more than they delivered.
Antonio opened the scoring with a superb bullet header from Mark Noble's cross in the 37th minute, with Vardy countering with a brilliant finish for his 16th goal of the season.
Substitute Perez thought he had won it on 82 minutes with a tap-in after fellow substitute Pedro Obiang had hit the post. He should have had another goal soon after but his effort was wrongly ruled offside by the linesman.
That allowed Leicester to launch one more attack and substitute Barnes kept his cool in injury time to slot home calmly for his first ever goal for the Foxes.
"I think we deserved more than a draw," said West Ham manager Manuel Pellegrini.
"We should have been leading 3-1 but it was a mistake of the linesman. I've seen the goal again and he was one metre onside."
Leicester manager Brendan Rodgers also accepted West Ham's goal should have stood, saying: "It looks like we got away with one."
