Football: Klopp excited by Premier League title fight
LIVERPOOL (AFP) - Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp insists the Premier League title race is something to get excited about rather than stressed about despite seeing his side overhauled by Manchester City in the past week.
City climbed to the top of the table on goal difference with victory against Everton in midweek but Liverpool's destiny remains in their own hands as they have a game in hand over Pep Guardiola's men, with both sides level on 62 points.
"It's getting exciting now," said Klopp on Friday (Feb 8).
"There was never a doubt that would happen. That was always clear. I don't think that anybody thought we would be top of the league with 12 points between us and another team with three games to go.
"The only chance to improve our position, even though it is a good position, is by winning football games."
Just over a week ago, Liverpool had the chance to move seven points clear at the top, but back-to-back draws with Leicester and West Ham on Monday have seen them reeled in by the champions.
Liverpool players and fans have been accused of letting nerves get to them in their desperation to end a 29-year wait to win the title.
Â
And Klopp called on the home fans to make Anfield a cauldron when Bournemouth visit on Saturday.
"It's like shouting your soul on the pitch. That's how we say it in German," added Klopp.
"I know that with each fibre of our bodies we will be ready to fight for everything.
"The only thing I want to say after the season is we gave our everything."
There was good news for Liverpool off the field on Friday as the club announced a world-record £106 million (S$140 million) net profit last year thanks to the sale of Philippe Coutinho to Barcelona and a run to the Champions League final.
Much of that profit has already been reinvested in the signings of Alisson Becker, Fabinho, Naby Keita and Xherdan Shaqiri, and Klopp is hoping he does not need to ask for a lot more money this summer.
"We built a really strong squad and that's a squad built for the future, not only this season," added the German.
"I hope we don't need too much money in the next years to be honest because if you have the right players in, you work with them and make the best of it."
Klopp's squad has been ravaged by injury and illness in recent weeks but he could have Trent Alexander-Arnold, Jordan Henderson and Georginio Wijnaldum back for Bournemouth's visit after all three returned to training on Thursday.

LONDON • Try telling Padraig Amond, Shaquile Coulthirst or Callum Lang - an unlikely trio of footballing journeymen - that the FA Cup has lost its lustre.
Try persuading the fans of Newport County, Barnet and Oldham Athletic, who all rejoiced in classic giant-killing feats on Sunday, that the grand old competition has mislaid its power to amaze and delight.
The Cup will, once again, likely be won by one of the Premier League's big guns in May, but the traditional third-round weekend at the turn of the year offered a timely reminder of why it remains close to the heart of English fans.
After minor league Barnet had stunned four-time winners and Championship side Sheffield United 1-0 away with Coulthirst's penalty and fourth-tier Oldham beat Premier League side Fulham 2-1 with Lang's late header, the best was saved for last.
At Newport's rocking Rodney Parade, Amond's 85th-minute penalty sealed an unforgettable 2-1 win over 2016 English champions Leicester City.
The humble Welsh club, former Uefa Cup quarter-finalists, have endured a chequered history and went bust in 1989, only to reform and climb back slowly from the lowest ranks of minor-league football.
Two seasons ago, they seemed certain to slip out of fourth-tier League Two and back into obscurity.
But, under manager Michael Flynn, who took over with them 11 points adrift at the bottom, they have been transformed and now own a place in FA Cup folklore.
The club, 13th in League Two, came close last year when another Amond goal took them to within eight minutes of beating Tottenham before Harry Kane equalised and Spurs won the replay 2-0.
This time, Amond made sure Newport would not be denied as he tucked away a nerveless penalty, shortly after Leicester's Rachid Ghezzal's piledriver had cancelled out Jamille Matt's early opener.
Newport survived the anxious final minutes to record their first win over a top-flight club since beating Sheffield Wednesday in the third round in 1963-64.
"It's almost Roy of the Rovers stuff. It's the first time I've beaten a Premier League club as a manager so it's one I'll never forget," said Flynn, who joined his players for boxes of peri peri chicken delivered to the home dressing room.
"It's massive for the club to be in the fourth round again and to get some much-needed finances."
Darren Currie, handed the Barnet manager's job on a temporary basis last month, praised the fearlessness of his side after their shock win over Sheffield United, flying high in third place in the Championship.
It is the first time the National League side have reached the fourth round since 2008 and they were the lowest-ranked team in yesterday's draw.
"They've been brilliant. I was proud of them in the two previous games, but this takes it to a whole new level," Currie said of his team.
Oldham caretaker manager Pete Wild, who has been in charge for less than a fortnight since Frankie Bunn's exit, saw his side bridge a 59-place gap in the English league pyramid to upset Fulham.
"We're from a small town overshadowed by big neighbours and I'm so proud to give something back," he said.
Fulham manager Claudio Ranieri accused his players of lacking passion, saying: "We need the fire, the passion, the blood. We need everything if we want to be safe. That is the real problem."

Klopp could miss United clash with touchline ban
LONDON • Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp could miss the crucial Premier League clash at Manchester United on Feb 24.
The German is facing a touchline ban or a fine after being charged by the Football Association (FA) for comments he made about referee Kevin Friend after his side's league match at West Ham on Feb 4.
Klopp intimated after the 1-1 draw that Friend's second-half performance had been affected by an assistant referee's mistake for Sadio Mane's opening goal.
Mane's goal stood at the London Stadium despite James Milner being clearly offside in the build-up before Michail Antonio's equaliser cost Liverpool two points in the title race.
Klopp said after the game: "As a human being, if I know I have made a big mistake in the first half, I don't want to open the gap any more.
"Referees are obviously human beings, and I understand that, but I didn't during the game because I had no clue that our goal was offside."
The FA confirmed in a statement that Klopp had been charged for "questioning the integrity" of the match official and he has until 6pm on Monday to respond.
It said: "It is alleged that comments he made in a post-match interview following Liverpool's league game against West Ham United on Feb 4, 2019, breached Rule E3(1) as they questioned the integrity of the match referee and/or implied bias."
Liverpool are second in the Premier League behind Manchester City on goal difference, and with a game in hand.

Football: VAR to be used in Nations League finals week, says Uefa
LONDON (REUTERS) - Video Assistant Referees (VAR) will be used at this week's Uefa Nations League finals in Portugal, Europe's soccer governing body Uefa said on Monday (June 3).
VAR, which allows incidents to be reviewed with the help of video replays, was used at last year's World Cup in Russia and this season's Champions League knockout stages and will also be part of the English Premier League from next season.
Uefa briefed the coaches of Nations League semi-finalists Portugal, England, Switzerland and the Netherlands about VAR in April and England manager Gareth Southgate has welcomed its use in the competition.
"You'll never get a system that is 100 per cent fail-safe but the key decisions that are clear and obvious have been rectified," Southgate said. "My feeling... is that in the main the big decisions have been right."
The main criticisms of VAR are the amount of time it takes for decisions to be reviewed and that fans inside the stadium are left in the dark while the referee looks at replays on the sidelines.
Netherlands coach Ronaldo Koeman said the system still had room for improvement.
"VAR is a good help to make football fairer and most of the mistakes will be corrected. That of course is a good thing," Koeman said.
Â
"We must realise, however, that discussions will continue to exist, because you can often interpret actions in multiple ways. I am in favour of the VAR tackling the big, obvious issues only, rather than to search endlessly for potential errors."
England face the Netherlands in the Nations League semi-finals on June 6, a day after hosts Portugal play Switzerland in the first semi-final.

Football: Morata injury could make Sarri enter January sales
LONDON (AFP) - Chelsea coach Maurizio Sarri is likely to assess the attacking talent on offer in the January transfer window after Alvaro Morata suffered an injury this week.
The Spanish striker was forced out of the Europa League draw at Hungarian club Vidi just before half-time after injuring his knee while shooting and will almost certainly miss Chelsea's Premier League trip to Brighton on Sunday (Dec 16).
His misfortune allowed Olivier Giroud to enter the action and the France international responded with a superb late free-kick that secured a 2-2 draw and ensured Chelsea remained unbeaten throughout the group stage as they progressed to the last 32.
Sarri must now decide whether Giroud should start at the Amex Stadium or whether he again employs Eden Hazard in a central role as part of a less physical, more mobile forward line.
Given his frequent tactical changes so far, the Italian does not appear fully convinced that either approach is ideal.
Neither Morata nor Giroud have fully impressed this season. Morata has outscored his rival for the centre-forward role with five Premier League goals to Giroud's one but has again proved inconsistent, mirroring last season's form when he was bought as a replacement for Diego Costa.
Giroud told the Guardian this week he had no problem with biding his time at Chelsea because the prospect of winning a Premier League title kept him motivated.
"Alvaro (had) a great pre-season, so it was normal not to take him off the team even to put in a world champion. Let's be patient, work in training and come back stronger," he told the paper.
"I prefer to be at a big club rather than playing every week in a less prestigious team and I still have targets.
"To win a Premier League is my last dream as a footballer, maybe more than winning a Champions League, because I know how tough it is to win this league.
"I have team mates here who have won it, so I'm a bit jealous."
Former Real Madrid striker Alvaro made a promising start to his Chelsea career, scoring freely and demonstrating his strength in the air.
Recurring injuries and difficulty adapting to the physical demands of the Premier League have taken their toll, however, and Morata has rarely looked entirely comfortable since.
The man bought for £60 million (S$100 million) has never achieved the popularity at Stamford Bridge enjoyed by the abrasive Costa, whose willingness to confront defenders made him a supporters' favourite before his relationship with Sarri's predecessor Antonio Conte turned sour.
Reports this week that Barcelona could make Morata a target in January suggest he could leave sooner rather than later.
However, Sarri could not allow Morata to go without lining up a replacement - furthermore, Morata's injury this week has highlighted the risk of relying on just two principal strikers.
Giroud has given good service since he arrived from Arsenal last January but his return of four goals from 26 league appearances, 15 of those as a substitute, is not prolific.
His role for Chelsea mirrors that for France - he has an ability to bring team-mates into play in and around the opposition penalty area. To this effect, he has proved an encouraging presence for Hazard who has made it clear he prefers to operate coming in from wide areas.
Hazard's relationship with Conte suffered when the Italian used him in a more central role and having been again asked to switch, the goals have dried up for the Belgian.
He scored eight goals in the opening ten games but has now failed to find the net in eight games.
Chelsea's hopes of winning the title rest on Sarri getting the Belgian scoring again and finding a more consistent central striker - and the solution to both problems is likely to be found in the January transfer market.

Gotze predicts success for diligent Dortmund
MONACO • Borussia Dortmund star Mario Gotze is confident that his German side can go far in the Champions League after they qualified for the last 16 as Group A winners with a 2-0 win over Thierry Henry's Monaco on Tuesday.
Portugal midfielder Raphael Guerreiro scored twice to claim all three points for the visitors as they snatched top spot from Atletico Madrid - who could only draw 0-0 at Club Brugge - with a superior head-to-head record.
"With all the possession we had, you'd have to say we deserved the win in the end," Gotze said on the club's official website.
"Winning the group makes it that bit sweeter. We were saying before the match that we felt Atletico might draw 0-0. Fortunately, this turned out to be the case.
"The situation is really positive. As long as we work hard as a team, both in defence and in attack, we're going to have a lot of success."
Meanwhile, Atletico president Enrique Cerezo stole the limelight before their match when he appeared to let slip a sexist remark, telling a female reporter he did not wish to discuss money with a woman.
Cristina Garcia Tirado of Spanish television station Cuatro had asked if the club had enough money to offer a new contract to veteran defender Diego Godin.
"To be sincere, I don't like to speak about money because it is uncouth, and even less so with a woman," Cerezo said in response to her question.
Garcia herself played down the comment, saying Cerezo was "a great person and a gentleman" and had always been respectful to her and other women.
"It was an unfortunate moment from the president but, normally, he is very respectful towards me. I think it was a lapse and he didn't think about his answer. He has always treated me kindly," she said.
"It's true that sometimes he says things and makes jokes without thinking about the consequences, but he does not want to cause any harm."
Last week, French DJ Martin Solveig was widely criticised for asking Lyon forward Ada Hegerberg, when she came on stage to receive the inaugural Ballon d'Or award for the best player in women's football, whether she could "twerk".
In Istanbul, Group D winners Porto struggled to a 3-2 away victory over Galatasaray but, despite the loss, the Turkish side finished third and secured a spot in the Europa League's round of 32.
Lokomotiv Moscow had needed a win against already-qualified Schalke to have any hope of snatching third place away from Galatasaray, but they fell to a stoppage-time goal from Alessandro Schoepf and finished bottom after the 1-0 defeat.

LONDON (AFP) - Crystal Palace have opened up their Selhurst Park stadium to rough sleepers seeking shelter from the winter weather, the English Premier League side said.

Under a deal with the Croydon Council local authority, people formally identified as sleeping rough are referred to Selhurst Park, where they can access a camp bed for the night, a hot evening meal, breakfast and washing facilities.
Eight people used the shelter on Thursday night, the first time it was opened, the club said in a statement.
The lounge was then converted back again on Friday morning.

LONDON • The Christmas mood is being felt early at Manchester City, with manager Pep Guardiola lavishing praise on Everton, their opponents in the Premier League today.
The Toffees remain the only side to have played two league matches at City's Etihad Stadium against Guardiola and not lost, following two 1-1 draws.
The City boss, in a sky blue Christmas jumper at his pre-match press conference yesterday, said: "We make good games but we dropped four points (against Everton).
"Tomorrow is another game, the Everton team has changed completely with (Gylfi) Sigurdsson and Richarlison, Yerry Mina.
"They are a top side. I'm really impressed with how they have done so far. They played well not just at Liverpool (1-0 loss), but also at Chelsea (0-0 draw).
"Marco Silva's teams are always well-organised. We're going to speak today to discuss how we can attack them more fluently."
City are looking to bounce back following their first league defeat, 2-0 at Chelsea, the last time out. One point behind leaders Liverpool, the champions can claim top spot with a draw thanks to a better goal difference. The Reds, on 42 points, face Manchester United at Anfield tomorrow.
The statistics are looking good for City. They have not suffered consecutive league defeats since December 2016, when they lost to Chelsea and Leicester.
The possible return of playmaker Kevin de Bruyne and striker Sergio Aguero from injury, as Guardiola suggested yesterday, would be a boost for the team as well.
To add icing to the Christmas cake, the champions will also be buoyed by the fact they have won their last nine league games at home with an aggregate of 33-6.
Everton defender Michael Keane, however, believes that his team can beat City today.
"We will go to City with the belief we can cause them a lot of problems," he said on the club website.
"We have to believe we can win. There has been a lot of progress this season. If you compare us to last season, we are completely different.
"The manager has brought in brilliant players, the squad is a lot deeper and we are ready to compete at the top end. We just need to get over that hurdle of becoming one of the top-six sides and I think we will really kick on when we achieve that."
Everton manager Silva is feeling confident after avoiding defeat in five of their last six games.
"It's a good game for us to enjoy. To challenge a team like City will be tough but our players and team have shown they enjoy a game like this as well," he said at his pre-match conference yesterday.
British media also reported yesterday that City are eyeing a move for Leicester and England left-back Ben Chilwell after Guardiola's frustrations with Benjamin Mendy's injury problems.
The Spaniard, however, dismissed those claims during his conference, insisting that the club will not make any new signings in the January transfer window.

Spurs need to 'believe'
LONDON • Mauricio Pochettino has admitted that the hamstring injury which forced Dele Alli out of Tottenham's 2-1 Premier League win at Fulham on Sunday "did not look great" as he faced up to the loss of yet another key attacking player.
Spurs play Chelsea in the League Cup semi-final, second leg at Stamford Bridge on Thursday, holding a 1-0 lead from the first leg.
Pochettino is already resigned to being without Harry Kane, who has an ankle ligament injury, and Son Heung-min, who is on international duty with South Korea at the Asian Cup.
Lucas Moura, who missed the Fulham game because of knee trouble, should return at Chelsea, but Moussa Sissoko (groin) and Victor Wanyama (knee) are out while the Spurs manager now faces an anxious wait over Alli.
The Argentinian manager has already made it clear that he does not consider a move in the January transfer market as a solution to what seems like a selection crisis.
"We need to assess Dele in the next few days, but the hamstring is a muscle that you need to be careful with - in terms of the mechanism of the injury," he said.
"We need to assess but, of course, it does not look great. On the pitch, I think we all agree that when you see him put his hand on his hamstring, it's not great to see that."
Pochettino, who did welcome back Eric Dier as a substitute after appendix surgery, added that the long injury list gives other members in his squad the chance to step up.
"It's not a worry, it's a massive opportunity for different players," he said. "We're going to go to Chelsea expecting to win. The most important thing is to believe."
In the absence of Kane and Son - who have scored 22 league goals between them this season - Tottenham found an unlikely match winner in Harry Winks on Sunday.
The England midfielder had not scored for the club since November 2016, but he struck seconds before the final whistle to seal a 2-1 victory at Craven Cottage.
It was also the first time since March 2014 that Spurs have won a league game without Kane or Son.
Kane's replacement, Fernando Llorente, had endured a tough afternoon. He scored a 14th-minute own goal and then wasted two gilt-edged chances. Alli then netted the equaliser before he went off.
The win meant that Tottenham moved to within nine points of leaders Liverpool and five behind Manchester City, but also gave them breathing space over Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester United in the battle for a top-four finish.
"It was an unbelievable finish. That's why it is so important to believe," added Pochettino, whose side have won 11 of 13 matches on the road in the league this season.

Football: Crystal Palace get crucial 1-0 win over Leicester City
LONDON (REUTERS) - Crystal Palace moved five points clear of the bottom three in the Premier League when Luka Milivojevic scored to give the south London club a 1-0 win over Leicester City on Saturday (Dec 15).
Roy Hodgson’s side had suffered a nightmare spell in the top flight, winning just one of their previous 11 Premier League games, but they broke the Wilfried Zaha curse by triumphing for the first time in 14 games without their influential forward.
Leicester had the ball in the Palace net after 27 minutes but Jamie Vardy’s effort was disallowed. The former England striker made the most of a poor touch from Crystal Palace goalkeeper Vicente Guaita on his Premier League debut and slotted the ball into the back of the net but he was adjudged to have fouled the keeper.
Leicester were made to pay as Milivojevic put Palace into the lead after 39 minutes with a stunning strike.
The Serbian midfielder picked up the ball 25 metres from goal and fired a powerful shot which flew past Kasper Schmeichel into the top left-hand corner.
Another Vardy shot was kept out after 79 minutes. Kelechi Iheanacho fed the ball into the path of the Leicester forward who, from a tight angle, looked to have equalised but his effort was pushed on to the inside of the post by Guaita and back into the arms of the Palace keeper.
Palace captain Milivojevic was pleased to see his side get back on winning form, saying: “It’s very big, a massive three points for us. I think we deserved it after everything. We’ve had many games where we scored but lost in the end and thankfully we broke that today.
“Winning at home is very important because, for the fans, from last season, we took many points here in our stadium and it’s very important to have taken that back for our team and our confidence.â€Â
Manager Hodgson told the BBC: “In the first half I thought we were very good. We lost Cheikhou Kouyate in the second half and when he had come off it handed the ascendancy to Leicester. We then had to make certain we worked hard and ground out the victory.
“We did not concede that many chances and the one we did, that I thought they would score (from), we had a stroke of fortune.â€Â
Leicester manager Claude Puel said his side were inconsistent. “I think we did not start the game with the right intensity. We played a poor first half, it was not enough,†he told the BBC.
“We came back in the second half with a good intensity and quality. We had three or four chances to come back into the game. I think we deserved to come back but it is a big disappointment because we need the points.
“We were unlucky at the end but we lost three points. It is important to correct this and to play a consistent game from the start until the end.â€

Mission complete for Tottenham
BARCELONA • Mauricio Pochettino hailed his players for achieving "mission impossible" after Tottenham completed an improbable turnaround to qualify for the last 16 of the Champions League on Tuesday.
The 1-1 draw at Barcelona put the exclamation point on Spurs' European campaign to consign their nightmare start in Group B to distant memory.
Pochettino's men had garnered only a point from their opening three games, but arrived at the Nou Camp knowing that Inter Milan had to better their result to go through.
The Spanish champions had already qualified as group winners and their much-changed line-up gave the away fans hope with Barca coach Ernesto Valverde handing Juan Miranda and Carles Alena their Champions League debuts.
Munir El Haddadi played up front while Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez, Gerard Pique, Jordi Alba, Marc-Andre ter Stegen and Sergio Busquets all dropped to the bench as Valverde opted to rest his regulars ahead of the Spanish champions' LaLiga trip to Levante on Sunday.
But Spurs' plight looked bleak when Ousmane Dembele's sensational individual strike put them on the back foot in the group decider.
Yet Lucas Moura's late leveller ensured the Premier League club would reach the knockout phase for only the third time in their history. They were indebted, however, to PSV Eindhoven, who held Inter to a surprise 1-1 draw at the San Siro.
After sneaking above the Italian Serie A side due to a better head-to-head record, Pochettino declared it was a "massive motivation" with Spurs' new stadium expected to be ready when the last-16 ties take place in February.
"I'm so happy, so proud, I remember that after PSV, no one believed in us, it was mission impossible but we are here, we're in the next round," he told reporters.
"It's a massive achievement for the club, we're happy for the fans here and around the world, it's a massive boost for the club, to be able to play in the knockout rounds next year in the new stadium."
The Argentinian admitted that he and his players were caught in two minds over whether to try to hold on for the draw or seek a winner after news filtered through about Mauro Icardi's second-half equaliser for Inter.
Hirving Lozano had opened the scoring for Dutch champions PSV.
"It was difficult to manage the last 10 minutes. The players knew the result of Inter, but it is difficult to translate what to do to the field," he said.
"You have to score to win but, if you concede and lose the game, maybe you talk in a different way afterwards."
The manager also felt progression from a group that had opponents of genuine European pedigree ranked among his greatest achievements since taking over Spurs in 2014.
"It was so difficult to manage everything inside, but we made a fantastic effort. To see and celebrate with everyone after four years and a half was great, it was the first time I felt something really special," he added.
"The connection is amazing, but we need to be clever about how we manage that energy tonight."

SINGAPORE - English Premier League (EPL) giants Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur, along with Italian Serie A's top clubs Juventus and Inter Milan have been announced on Wednesday morning (March 27) as the teams playing in the International Champions Cup (ICC) in Singapore in July.
The pre-season tournament for Europe's top football clubs will be played in Singapore's National Stadium.
The Red Devils will take on Inter on July 20 and a day later, the Old Lady of Turin will meet Spurs.
Legends from the clubs - Dwight Yorke (United), Francesco Toldo (Inter), Fabrizio Ravanelli (Juventus) and Teddy Sheringham (Tottenham) were present at the launch at the Incubator, near the Padang.
With no World Cup and European Championship played in the summer, the stage is set for a galaxy of stars to play in Singapore, apart from the South American players involved in the Copa America.
Sheringham said: "There is nothing like seeing the teams in the flesh. And with no distraction of other big tournaments (in Europe), hopefully all the big players will be on show for our Asian fans."
Yorke added: "We know that Asia is one of our biggest markets and, certainly, Singapore is very important. We want to feel connected to our fanbase and we are excited to come back (to Singapore) and to improve our brand as well."
United's visit will be particularly exciting to its large fanbase here. The club last played in Singapore in 2001, when a side that featured Roy Keane, David Beckham and even goalkeeper Fabien Barthez playing up front defeated a Singapore Selection side 8-1, with Lions striker Indra Sahdan scoring for the hosts.
Former Italian international striker Ravanelli took the opportunity to indulge in some banter with Inter, saying: "We are different from Inter because we (Juventus) are always at the top. We are constantly expanding tactically but we also want to improve our knowledge and understanding of this part of the world."
In 2017, when the ICC first came to Singapore, Bayern Munich, Chelsea and Inter Milan were the elite clubs that were invited.
Last year, Arsenal, Atletico Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain were the teams that battled it out at Kallang.

LIVERPOOL (AFP) - Liverpool roared back from a rare Anfield deficit to move nine points clear at the top of the Premier League as Roberto Firmino's hat-trick inspired a 5-1 thrashing of Arsenal on Saturday (Dec 29).
Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane were also on target as Liverpool's front three all scored in the same league game for the first time this season.
Liverpool had trailed at home in the league for the first time in a day short of a year when Ainsley Maitland-Niles turned home Alex Iwobi's excellent cross 11 minutes in.
However, the lead lasted just three minutes as Firmino profited from some calamitous Arsenal defending to level and then left Shkodran Mustafi and Sokratis Papastathopoulos on the floor to score his second goal in three minutes.
Mane and Salah's penalty had the game wrapped up by half-time and Firmino completed his hat-trick from the spot as Jurgen Klopp's men extended their unbeaten league start to 20 games and took another significant step towards a first league title since 1989/1990.
"The reaction was obviously absolutely brilliant," said Klopp.
"We haven't conceded too many goals this season, especially the first one, so you don't know what the reaction would be."
Manchester City now trail the pace setters by 10 points and, even if they reduce that lead to seven with victory at Southampton on Sunday, the champions need to end Liverpool's invincible season so far when the sides meet on Thursday at the Etihad to get back in the title race.
However, Klopp repeated his plea of recent weeks for his players not to get carried away.
"We never thought about that," he said of Liverpool's nine-point advantage.
"It's a supporters and journalists game, but we cannot be a part of it."
Â
Tottenham's title ambitions suffered a huge blow as Wolves scored three times in the final 18 minutes to win 3-1 at Wembley earlier on Saturday to further embolden Anfield with belief before kick-off.
"For sure Tottenham's result people out there reacted, but not inside the dressing room where they were completely concentrated on the match and not allowed to have that influence our game," added Klopp.
That confidence could have been shaken when after a bright Liverpool start, it was Arsenal who led when Iwobi's teasing cross perfectly dissected Alisson Becker and Virgil van Dijk, to leave Maitland-Niles with an open goal.
But after a slow start, Salah, Firmino and Mane are beginning to show the form they did last season in smashing a combined 91 goals.
Firmino didn't even have to look at the ball when he slotted the equaliser into an empty net after Sokratis's attempted clearance rebounded off Mustafi into his path to quickly level.
However, the Brazilian did all the hard work himself two minutes later by jinking through Arsenal's hapless central defensive pairing before drilling low past Bernd Leno.
"It's a difficult moment for us," said Arsenal boss Unai Emery, whose side could slip five points adrift of the top four if Chelsea win at Crystal Palace on Sunday.
"We spoke in the dressing room, it is another experience for us, but from bad experiences you learn."
Mane made it 3-1 on 32 minutes when Salah cushioned a cross perfectly into the Senegalese's path to side-foot high into the net.
And Liverpool were given the chance to extend their lead just before half-time when Salah tumbled under pressure from Sokratis in the box.
Leno got a touch to the Egyptian's spot-kick but couldn't stop Salah moving level with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Harry Kane as the Premier League's top scorer on 13.
Salah gave up the chance to move clear in the race for the golden boot when Sead Kolasinac pushed Dejan Lovren 25 minutes from time and Firmino gratefully fired home the penalty much to his manager's delight.
"Mo Salah gave the penalty to Bobby and I almost cried because we all know how much Mo wants to score goals," added Klopp.
"It was one of the nicest things I've ever seen in my life, just outstanding. So far the gesture of the season."

Football: Brighton hold Arsenal to stop losing run
LONDON (REUTERS) - Brighton & Hove Albion came from a goal down to draw 1-1 with Arsenal in the Premier League on Wednesday (Dec 26) and arrest a run of three straight defeats.
Their poor run looked like continuing as Arsenal took the lead after seven minutes, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang producing a fine side-foot finish wide in the box for his 13th league goal of the season.
However, the Gunners have only kept three clean sheets in 19 league games and were pegged back just after the half hour mark.
A long ball up the field came off the head of Stephan Lichtsteiner and fell to Jurgen Locadia who had sprinted up the pitch and did well to poke it past Arsenal goalkeeper Bernd Leno.
Brighton midfielder Davy Propper headed just wide shortly after halftime, while Solly March later got on the end of another long ball but his attempted lob went well over the bar.
Arsenal pressed for a late winner in stoppage time but were unable to break forward in enough numbers to breach Brighton's steadfast defence.
Unai Emery's side climbed into the top four, albeit briefly as fifth placed Chelsea, behind by only one point, take on Watford later on Wednesday.
"I'm a little disappointed. I think the first half was key in the match. We started winning and had another two chances, and they saved from Aubameyang," Emery said.
"We didn't concede (many) chances for them but they drew level. Second half we could not impose our game plan. We did not make more clear chances to win the match."
Brighton remain 13th in the table but manager Chris Hughton felt the win had been his side's for the taking.
"After a difficult start and going behind against a good team, we showed great character to get back in the game," he told Sky Sports.
"I thought in the second half if there was a team going to score it was us, we were a bigger threat, Solly March probably has the best chance of the game."

Blues manager Maurizio Sarri hails Higuain-Hazard partnership
Blues manager Maurizio Sarri hails Higuain-Hazard partnership
LONDON • Maurizio Sarri has tried everything this season in a bid to solve Chelsea's scoring woes from persisting with Olivier Giroud and Alvaro Morata despite their slump in form to playing Eden Hazard as a "false nine".
But, until last month's arrival of Gonzalo Higuain, on loan from Juventus until the end of the season, the Blues' attack has not quite lived up to the fans' expectations of "Sarri-ball".
While the goals have dried up, they have also been conceding at the other end, with Sarri under pressure following their heaviest Premier League defeat for 23 years in a shock 4-0 loss at Bournemouth last Wednesday.
Having suffered two successive losses in the league and sack rumours swirling, the Italian was indebted to Higuain, who opened his Blues account with a brace, and a double from Hazard as the pair inspired the home team to a 5-0 trouncing of rock-bottom Huddersfield on Saturday.
Although the Argentina striker failed to reproduce his best form while on loan at AC Milan earlier this season - scoring only eight goals in 20 appearances - he came to Stamford Bridge at his manager's behest after their successful spell together at Napoli.
And the 31-year-old, on his home league debut, demonstrated why Sarri was desperate for his signature as his presence up front enabled Hazard to return to his preferred position on the flanks, where he is at his most dangerous.
Not only did Chelsea look a far more vibrant team, it was also their biggest win of the season, with David Luiz adding the fifth.
Afterwards, Sarri told reporters he was encouraged by the link-up play between Higuain and Hazard.
He said: " I'm really very happy because apart from the goals, he (Higuain) is really very suitable to play very close to Eden. On the pitch, they are really very suitable to play one close to the other.
"For us, that is very useful. It will be useful for Higuain - he will be able to score goals for us - and also useful for Eden. I know very well that, when he arrived, he wasn't at the top of his physical condition. Now, he is improving."
While it is still early days with the Belgium forward playing only his second game alongside Higuain, there are signs that the budding partnership can flourish.
According to Sky Sports, Hazard found him seven times during the Terriers game - more passes than he has made to Giroud or Morata in any league game this season.
However, with the stinging defeat by the Cherries fresh in his mind, Sarri warned his side that they still needed "to improve the mentality".
He added: "As I said before, we have to arrive at every match with the same level of determination and motivation, and we don't need to lose a match to have the right motivation.
"So, we need to improve. We need to understand that, in the future, we should not have to lose a game to add motivation."
