Football: Iran steamroller China to reach semi-finals of Asian Cup

ABU DHABI (REUTERS) - Regional heavyweights Iran underlined their Asian Cup title credentials with a comfortable 3-0 victory over Marcello Lippi's China on Thursday (Jan 24) to reach the semi-finals of the continental championship for the first time since 2004.
Goals from forwards Mehdi Taremi, Sardar Azmoun and Karim Ansarifard combined with a record-equalling fifth straight clean sheet was enough to set up a last four date with four-times champions Japan in Al Ain next Monday.
Outmuscled by the physical Iranians and embarrassed by a series of defensive howlers, China sent World Cup-winning coach Lippi into almost certain retirement by exiting with barely a whimper at the Mohammed bin Zayed Stadium.
The lively Iranian forward line were allowed far too much space from the start and winger Alireza Jahanbakhsh sent a cross-shot whistling past the post in the fourth minute.
The massed ranks of Iran fans did not have to wait long for the first goal, though, and it came in the 18th minute from the simplest of long balls up the middle.
China defender Feng Xiaoting hesitated and Azmoun pounced, taking his time to turn before sliding the ball across the area to the unmarked Mehdi, who had all the time in the world to stroke it into the net.
Mehdi looked unlucky not to get a penalty three minutes later but the match official resisted Iranian pleas that he check with the video assistant referee (VAR), newly installed for the quarter-finals.

Feng was hauled off in the 28th minute but two minutes later another Chinese defender was deceived by a long ball, Azmoun wrestling his way past Liu Yiming before rounding goalkeeper Yan Junling and slotting the ball into the net from an angle.
China came out with a little more purpose after the break and substitute Xiao Zhi ballooned a header over the bar but they were still caught in possession too often and Iranian goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand snuffed out anything too dangerous.
Fullback Ehsan Hajsafi drilled a low shot towards the China goal on the hour mark that Yan did well to push away and it looked like, as in their last 16 match against Oman at the same stadium, Iran would be unable to score after the break.
In stoppage time, however, Mehdi robbed China's Shi Ke on the halfway line and his pass sent Ansarifard clear to put the gloss on another emphatic step towards ending Iran's 43-year wait for a fourth continental title.

Football: Everton ride luck for 2-0 victory at home to Bournemouth

(REUTERS) - Everton avoided a third consecutive Premier League home defeat as Kurt Zouma's header and a late goal by Dominic Calvert-Lewin earned them a flattering 2-0 victory against Bournemouth at a rainy Goodison Park on Sunday (Jan 13).
There were grumblings of discontent from the home fans as Everton were outplayed before the break but Marco Silva’s side improved after the interval to move back into the top half of the table.  Bournemouth have now lost six successive away league games.
“I think the result is really harsh on us today, we competed in a really tough game and we had some chances we didn’t take but the scoreline doesn’t reflect the performance,” Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe said.
“The fighting spirit and determination was on show, we pressed well and we nullified their threats for large spells.”
It was hard to disagree with Howe’s assessment, especially before the interval when his eye-catching side dominated.
Young Welsh striker David Brooks was a thorn in the Everton defence and he struck a shot against the base of the post in the 14th minute after being played in by Junior Stanislas, who himself nearly embarrassed England keeper Jordan Pickford with a free kick.
Bournemouth also had two penalty shouts ignored before Everton gradually roused themselves, with defender Michael Keane heading against the crossbar shortly before half-time.  Everton began to click after the break and Richarlison’s shot was cleared off the line by Nathan Ake.
The hosts took the lead with only their second effort on target in the 61st minute.  Lucas Digne did well to keep a ball in play and his hoisted cross was headed home powerfully by defender Zouma for his first Everton goal since joining on loan from Chelsea.
Everton’s second in stoppage-time, struck home excellently by Calvert-Lewin after great work by Ademola Lookman, was harsh on Bournemouth who will wonder how they went home unrewarded.
Everton boss Silva was especially impressed by the performance of 21-year-old midfielder Lookman who is being linked with a move away from Goodison Park.
“It was a fantastic performance and we know he is at that level, but he will improve more and more,” Silva said.  “Even if 2-0 is a tough result to take for them, we deserved the points and our players showed big personality and character as a team.”
Bournemouth, who had 16 goal attempts, remained in 12th spot with 27 points from 22 games, nine points above the bottom three. Everton moved into 10th spot on 30 points.Â

Football: Valiant Hungary fight back to stun Croatia 2-1

BUDAPEST (REUTERS) - Hungary midfielder Mate Patkai scored his first international goal to secure a come-from-behind 2-1 victory over World Cup runners-up Croatia in a Euro 2020 Group E qualifier on Sunday (March 24).
The result in a pulsating match threw the group wide open after Wales beat Slovakia 1-0 in Cardiff earlier on Sunday.
Slovakia, Wales, Hungary and Croatia have three points each while Azerbaijan have none, although like the Welsh the Azeris have only played one game while the rest have played two.
The Croatians, who laboured to a 2-1 home win over Azerbaijan on Thursday (March 21), appeared set for plain sailing when Ante Rebic gave them a sixth-minute lead from close range after Andrej Kramaric poked a low cross into his path.
But Hungary, roared on by a fervent home crowd in the Groupama Arena, levelled in the 34th through striker Adam Szalai who took a clever Balazs Dzsudzsak pass into his stride and powered his shot past keeper Lovre Kalinic from a tight angle.
Captain Dzsudzsak, who celebrated a milestone 100th international appearance with a fine display, was at the heart of Hungary's spirited performance which was rewarded by Patkai's 76th-minute winner after Croatia failed to clear a corner.
Croatia substitute Marin Leovac failed to head away the inswinging set piece and Patkai steered the ball past Kalinic from two metres to delight the home faithful while silencing a large contingent of vocal away fans.
Hungary, who lost 2-0 away to Slovakia in their opener, nearly scored again several minutes later as Croatia cleared the ball of the line three times in a frantic goalmouth scramble and failed to threaten at the other end in the closing stages.
Earlier, Wales midfielder Daniel James netted a fifth-minute winner against Slovakia with his first international goal on his competitive debut for the Welsh, who visit Croatia in their next qualifier on June 8 when Hungary travel to Azerbaijan.

Football: Ole Gunnar Solskjaer named permanent Manchester United manager on 3-year deal

LONDON (REUTERS, AGENCE FRANCE-PRESSE) - Manchester United have appointed Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as their permanent manager on a three-year contract, the English Premier League club said in a statement on their website on Thursday (March 28).
The 46-year-old Norwegian, the hero of the club's Champions League final win against Bayern Munich in 1999, has guided United to 14 wins in 19 matches in all competitions as caretaker boss since replacing the sacked Jose Mourinho in December.
“From the first day I arrived, I felt at home at this special club,” Solskjaer said in the statement.
“It was an honour to be a Manchester United player, and then to start my coaching career here.
“This is the job that I always dreamed of doing and I’m beyond excited to have the chance to lead the club long-term and hopefully deliver the continued success that our amazing fans deserve.”
United have won 10 of their 13 Premier League games under Solskjaer and reached the Champions League quarter-finals with a dramatic victory at French champions Paris St-Germain.
Several members of the first-team squad, including record signing Paul Pogba, have praised him for restoring the confidence and freedom the team lacked towards the end of Mourinho’s tenure.

“More than just performances and results, Ole brings a wealth of experience, both as a player and as a coach, coupled with a desire to give young players their chance and a deep understanding of the culture of the club,” said Ed Woodward, United’s executive vice-chairman.
“This all means that he is the right person to take Manchester United forward. I want to thank Ole and the coaching team for everything they have done so far and congratulate him on this richly deserved appointment.”
Fifth-placed United, who are locked in a battle for Champions League qualification spots with Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur, host Watford in the league on Saturday.
Solskjaer’s former United teammate Peter Schmeichel tweeted: “Congratulations my friend, it is well deserved. Up and onwards let’s chase some trophies.”

Former United defender Gary Neville welcomed the appointment and urged the club to back the new full-time boss financially.
“I’m delighted for Ole,” he tweeted. “I didn’t think this would happen when he was appointed. However the results and spirit in the club have been incredible since he arrived and he deserves it. He now needs support in the transfer market in terms of finance and the right resource!”

Another former United teammate of Solskjaer’s, Rio Ferdinand, tweeted: “Yessss Ole is officially at The Wheel... Signed, Sealed, Delivered! Manager of @ManUtd! I hope my Thank You is in post Ole.”

Ramsey moving to Juve on five-year $62m deal

Ramsey moving to Juve on five-year $62m deal

LONDON • Aaron Ramsey has agreed a five-year deal with Juventus worth £36 million (S$62 million) and will join the Italian champions on a free transfer at the end of the season.
The 28-year-old Wales midfielder has been discussing a move for weeks and will leave Arsenal after 10 years. It had been clear he would move on in the summer and Juventus had been the front runners to secure his signature.
He will be paid around £140,000 a week, making him Juventus' second-highest earner behind Cristiano Ronaldo but ahead of Paulo Dybala and Douglas Costa.
Juventus, who have won the past seven Serie A titles, signed Ronaldo for €100 million (S$156 million) last summer and are on 53 points, nine clear of Napoli after 19 games.
They have reached two of the last four Champions League finals, losing to Barcelona in 2015 and Real Madrid in 2017.
They have reached the last 16 of Europe's top club competition this season, where they will face another Spanish side Atletico Madrid.
Juventus manager Max Allegri and director Fabio Paratici are huge admirers of Ramsey, who is set to be given a place in the starting XI, most likely with Miralem Pjanic and Blaise Matuidi in a three-man midfield.
He is likely to replace one of Emre Can, Rodrigo Bentancur and Sami Khedira, with the latter possibly leaving in the summer.
Ramsey signed for Arsenal from Cardiff for £4.8 million. He has played 252 top-flight games for the club, scoring 52 goals. He won three FA Cups, scoring the winning goal in the 2014 and 2017 finals.
He played arguably the best football of his career during Euro 2016 when Wales reached the semi-finals. But he was suspended for that match, which they lost 2-0 to eventual winners Portugal.
He has had his fair share of injury problems but Juventus are delighted to secure him on a free.
For Arsenal, who are playing in the second-tier Europa League for a second straight season, they will regret seeing a player in his prime leave under these circumstances.
With Arsenal choosing to renew the contract of Mesut Ozil, another star whose deal was due to expire this summer, they put themselves in a position where they could not re-sign Ramsey too, without keeping their £200 million annual wage bill under control.
Arsenal manager Unai Emery also had major reservations over both Ozil and Ramsey fitting into his plans and the style he wants to play.

Difficult match for both but Chelsea must not lose: Sarri

Difficult match for both but Chelsea must not lose: Sarri

LONDON • Chelsea cannot afford to lose at Manchester United tomorrow in what will be a "difficult match" for both teams looking to finish in the Premier League's top four, Maurizio Sarri said at his pre-match press conference.
He told reporters yesterday: "We have two very important targets at the end of our season.
"The first is the top four and the second is to get to the final of the Europa League.
"For the first target, this match is more than important for us and for our opponents. So we will try to win, of course, but we (just) need not to lose."
Fourth-placed Chelsea are three points above United, who are in sixth, with only three games left, and Sarri's men also have a lifeline via the Europa League as they can qualify for the Champions League if they win the tournament.
However, the Blues have yet to win a single point away at a Big Six club this season, losing four games, conceding 13 goals and scoring only one.

BRACED FOR REBOUND
In the second half of the season, we face the big teams away, only Tottenham at home. It's not easy. We have to play against opponents with a very high level of motivation after the Manchester derby. But we have to try.
MAURIZIO SARRI, Chelsea manager, on facing Manchester United at Old Trafford.

They are also facing a United side hurting from a 2-0 midweek humbling at the hands of cross-town rivals Manchester City, and Sarri bemoaned their fixture list, which has been less than kind to them.
The Italian, who also confirmed winger Callum Hudson-Odoi would be out for at least three months with a ruptured Achilles tendon, while midfielder N'Golo Kante was a doubt, said: "In the second half of the season, we face the big teams away, only Tottenham at home.
"It's not easy. We have to play against opponents with a very high level of motivation after the Manchester derby. But we have to try."
Sarri, who was fined £8,000 (S$14,067) by the Football Association on Thursday after accepting a misconduct charge arising from their 2-2 Premier League draw against Burnley earlier in the week, also felt Eden Hazard should have been named in the Professional Footballers' Association's (PFA) Team of the Year.
No player has been involved in more goals than the Belgium forward, who is on the six-man shortlist for the PFA Player of the Year award, in the league this term (16 goals and 13 assists) and Sarri is of the opinion that their league position is the reason behind the snub.
He added: "Eden deserved to be in the top 11 of the Premier League. But, at the moment, the table is clear. There is City, there is Liverpool... so the vote was influenced by the table."

Spurs ready for revenge mission against Arsenal: Lloris

LONDON • Hugo Lloris has warned Arsenal that Tottenham are determined to avenge their recent north London derby despair when the rivals clash again in the League Cup quarter-finals today.
Mauricio Pochettino's side travel to the Emirates Stadium just over two weeks after crashing to a 4-2 defeat at the hands of their bitter neighbours in the Premier League.
The fiery encounter featured a bust-up between players from both teams after Spurs' Eric Dier, who will miss the Cup tie after appendix surgery, enraged Arsenal with a provocative goal celebration.
Adding to the toxic mood around the clash, Unai Emery's players were not shy about taking to social media to brag about their victory, with goalkeeper Bernd Leno's Instagram post branded as "disrespectful" by Pochettino.
"Maybe it's a good thing that we lost the Premier League game a few weeks ago because it is more motivation for us," goalkeeper Lloris said. "There are no more bad feelings than when you get a defeat. It is another opportunity and we will try our best to go through.
"Every game that you lose it hurts. Arsenal are playing very well and are a difficult team to beat, but we have the quality to do it."
There is an expectation that both managers are likely to field under-strength teams to rest their key players ahead of a hectic Christmas schedule.
However, Lloris insisted Spurs, who have not won a trophy since 2008, needed to take all competitions seriously.
"It is important to take every competition seriously, whatever the competition is," the Frenchman added. "Of course, there is priority in the season, but it is a League Cup game and, if you go through, there is a semi-final and a good chance.
"And then it is a derby, so it is easier to prepare for because there's always excitement and enjoyment to play that type of game."
While that defeat at Arsenal remains Spurs' only blip in their last 11 games, the home side's 22-match unbeaten run ended on Sunday at Southampton, exposing the flaws in their rearguard.
Making the situation worse for Emery is a growing injury list concerning his defenders, with Hector Bellerin set for "some weeks" on the sidelines, while Rob Holding is ruled out for the season.
Sead Kolasinac and Shkodran Mustafi are also injury doubts, and Emery has admitted his concern over his backline "conceding a lot more than we want to be doing".

Kepa 'should be sacked'

Kepa 'should be sacked'

LONDON • For Chelsea, the mutiny. For Manchester City, the bounty. A humdrum League Cup final won 4-3 on penalties by City after a goal-less finish will be remembered more for the dramatic events late on in extra time.
Chelsea goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga refused to leave the field when summoned to the bench by his manager Maurizio Sarri, who wanted to bring on Willy Caballero, a known penalty specialist.
It was an unprecedented sight on Sunday, but one that brought swift and unanimous condemnation.
Pundit Chris Sutton lashed out at the Spain international, telling BBC Sport "Kepa should be sacked".
The former Blues forward said: "I've seen players disgruntled before and throw a boot or their shirt down when they're taken off, but players know the rules.
"That should be his last performance in a Chelsea shirt. He's a disgrace, never seen anything like it.
"If I were Sarri, I would walk. You can't be undermined... It's not just Kepa who has disrespected Sarri, it's the Chelsea players."
Chelsea great John Terry felt Kepa's blatant dissent had subverted the Italian's authority.
He told Sky Sports: "Once your number goes up, you have to come off. It's a cloud over Chelsea's display after they played so well."
However, both Kepa and Sarri were on the same page afterwards, with the £71.6 million (S$126.3 million) summer signing issuing a statement on social media.
He tweeted: "At no time has it been my intention to disobey the coach or any of his decisions. The coach thought I was not in a position to play and my intention was to express I was good to continue helping the team. I have full respect for the coach and his authority."
Sarri also portrayed the furore as "a big misunderstanding", insisting: "I understood there was a problem and we needed a change. I understood he had cramp but the problem was not cramp, so he was able to go to penalties."
However, pundits were not buying the official line after Sarri, who had to be restrained by defender Antonio Rudiger, was seen repeatedly gesturing at Kepa to come off before storming down the tunnel.
Former Chelsea midfielder Craig Burley questioned on Twitter if that was the case, then "why Sarri was still trying to kill him just before the pens".
Ex-Chelsea player Ruud Gullit also claimed it was simply "a political answer for the newspapers".
Kepa did go on to save Leroy Sane's spot kick, but should have done better when Sergio Aguero's penalty slipped underneath him.
Chelsea fans were left wondering what could have been, had Caballero, who according to the Mirror has saved 11 out of 38 spot kicks in his career, come on.
City captain Vincent Kompany was relieved his former teammate was not fielded for the shoot-out, saying: "I know how good Caballero is on penalties. Last time, he won it (the 2016 Cup) for us so I didn't want him on."
While Pep Guardiola was "happy to win back-to-back in this competition for the first time in our history", it came at a cost with Fernandinho and Aymeric Laporte out injured for the "next few weeks".

Agree he should be sacked but he won't be. Player power has been a problem at Chelsea for years, all the players have been replaced many times over so it must be in the culture of the place. Won't change as Ambramovich has shown over and over again that the players are more important and have more power than the manager.

This is Reds year: James

This is Reds year: James

The fact that Liverpool have never won the Premier League title has been a constant source of grief for the supporters of the Reds, and glee for rival fans.
But, former Reds and England goalkeeper David James believes Jurgen Klopp's men will lift the "holy grail" this season.
"My son is in his 20s and he has never seen Liverpool win (the Premier League, which was inaugurated in 1992).
"There's always going to be doubt and pressure until Liverpool win the league," the 48-year-old told The Sunday Times last Friday in a phone interview.
"It's always described as the holy grail for Liverpool, they have won everything else except the Premier League. The advantage has to be with (joint leaders) Manchester City in a sense because they have that experience.
"But Klopp has won leagues before. The big games haven't gone quite right for him but all that adds experience for him and the Liverpool fan in me thinks this is Liverpool's year.

  • 1
Liverpool have lost just one of their last 13 Premier League away games (W9 D3), while Manchester United have kept just one clean sheet in their 12 home league games this season.
    2
Both sides have averaged over two goals a game in their last 10 matches but have managed to keep only two clean sheets in their last five league outings.
    7
United have won seven of their last nine home league games against Liverpool.

"They are top of the league, and still able to win games without scoring fours and fives. It is a credit to their defence being that good.
"Maintain this level of performance, that would be enough."
Former Manchester United defender Mikael Silvestre added: "For sure it helps to know what it takes, like how United did year after year.
"Maybe Liverpool don't know their limits at the moment but they did so well last season already. And I think they are not far off reaching their goal this year."
The two former players are in Singapore for Football Moments, the live screening of the Man United-Liverpool clash presented by Chang Beer and organised by Singtel Media at Clarke Quay.
For Liverpool's title push, they will have to overcome a United side revitalised by interim manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
The Norwegian stepped in after Jose Mourinho was sacked in the aftermath of their 3-1 loss in the reverse fixture last December.

SIGNS OF A CHAMPION
They are top of the league, and still able to win games without scoring fours and fives. It is a credit to their defence being that good. Maintain this level of performance, that would be enough.
DAVID JAMES, former Liverpool goalkeeper on their league title chances.

Ex-United striker Solskjaer has guided the Red Devils to 11 wins in 13 games since, including away victories at Tottenham, Arsenal and Chelsea.
Silvestre, who played with Solskjaer from 1999 to 2007 when they won four league titles, said: "If you have to judge on the past 13 games, with just one defeat, you would give him the job straight away, because I don't see a reason why not."
The Frenchman, 41, recalled how Solskjaer was mad about the video game Football Manager while other players indulged in more "exciting" games.
He said: "Because he wasn't a starter most of the time, he would study the game and the defenders and how he should behave and what he should do.
"I have never seen such a good sub. When you come on for the last 10 or 15 minutes, it is not easy but straightaway he was having an impact because he was always reading and studying the game from the bench. It's not a surprise he became a manager.
"He is the key to all the changes. What has changed are obviously the more positive style of play and the mood, which were missing," added Silvestre, who predicted a low-scoring win for United tonight.
James gave Solskjaer an A+ for his man-management skill, noting that the Norwegian would interact with his players after every game.
"I love what he does. He makes time for every single player, even the guys on the bench he will high-five and hug them and say thanks," said the pundit, who guessed a Mohamed Salah brace will give the Reds a 2-0 win tonight.
But James also noted the Solskjaer has not had to "hire and fire" anyone as the interim manager.
He said: "Once you take over the helm as full-time manager then it becomes less of a friendly relationship than a business relationship."
"A world-class player wants a world-class contract and if (Solskjaer) is not in a position to give them that, then some will not perform the way they should."

Football: Nervy wait for Liverpool and Manchester City fans as Premier League climax approaches

SINGAPORE - Aaron Kok has been to Anfield 16 times but the 17th time might be the most memorable of them all.
Or not.
The travel agency owner , who regularly organises trips to Liverpool's home ground, is bringing 45 other fellow Reds fans for the final game of the season against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Sunday (May 12).
The group will join thousands of supporters on Merseyside hoping to will Liverpool to their first top-flight title since 1990.
Kok, who leaves on Saturday (May 11), said: "I have a few friends who are already there and they've said there's a very festive mood there because everyone has been buzzing from the Champions League win."
"It's a dream for every fan to visit Anfield, to be able to go to the grounds and watch the team that they support. It will be a crazy day and everyone will be enjoying themselves with the atmosphere in Liverpool."
But with the odds stacked against them, Kok, 42, admitted the title might be out of Liverpool's hands.

"As long as we try our best, if Manchester City wins it's not within our control. We've already done brilliantly this season."
Fellow Reds fan and estate planner S.Kavindran, 36, is also holding on to that dream.
"One thing about Liverpool that's very different from other football clubs is that the whole Anfield vibe is not just a football ground, it's a holy ground.
"In the last few games we've been scoring late to win so I'm hopeful that we'll be able to pull it off again.
"Even if we fall short, we have to give it to the team. The way that they played the whole season, none of the other teams gave City a fight like we did."
Knowing a win at Brighton will secure City back-to-back Premier League titles, their fans here are largely optimistic.
Civil servant and Manchester City Singapore Supporters committee member Haizam Shah, 34, noted Brighton's improved recent form (1-1 draws against Newcastle and Arsenal) but believes the Citizens will not falter at the final hurdle.
He said: "Brighton are already safe from relegation, they have nothing to play for. But Liverpool are playing Wolves who are doing quite well. I won't say Brighton are pushovers but I'm confident in my team, that's for sure."
Jess Chen, who is self employed, has been supporting the Sky Blues since 1995. The 37-year-old said: "It's unbelievable seeing them transform from a team fighting relegation to where we are today. We're enjoying every moment and not taking anything for granted.
"Even if we don't win, we can't really blame anyone because the team has surpassed all expectations. They got maximum points since their last defeat (to Newcastle United in January) so you really can't ask for more.
"They've had several challenging tests in the final period in terms of quality of opponents and pressure from Liverpool. The toughest part is already past them so now it's just about crossing the line and finishing strong."

'Serene' Quagliarella becomes Italy's oldest scorer at 36

'Serene' Quagliarella becomes Italy's oldest scorer at 36

PARMA • Fabio Quagliarella attributed his new-found inner peace, following years of being harassed by a stalker, to his stunning form for club and country after the 36-year-old became the oldest player to score for Italy on Tuesday.
The Naples native converted two penalties to make it a total of nine goals for his country in a crushing 6-0 Euro 2020 qualifying win by the Azzurri over Liechtenstein in Parma.
Coach Roberto Mancini put out a mix of youth and experienced heads, which paid off handsomely with the other goals coming from Stefano Sensi, Marco Verratti, Moise Kean and Leonardo Pavoletti.
However, it was Quagliarella who grabbed the headlines after he earned his 26th and 27th caps in the past week - 81/2 years since his last Azzurri appearance - as a reward for scoring 21 goals in 27 Serie A games this term, two more than Juventus forward Cristiano Ronaldo.
After overtaking former Roma defender Christian Panucci who was 35 when he netted for Italy in 2008, the Sampdoria striker insisted he "did not feel his age".
"I feel good, I'm very serene. It's a wonderful evening," added Quagliarella, whose stalker was jailed for nearly five years in 2017.
"I want to thank my teammates. After the two goals, they encouraged me to get a third one too, but it didn't happen.
"I thank Jorginho and (Leonardo) Bonucci as they are the penalty takers and they told me to kick (instead). They said: 'The evening is yours, you kick it'. I also thank Mancini who gave me this opportunity."
The Stadio Ennio Tardini crowd was equally thrilled for him, giving him a standing ovation as he left the pitch. He acknowledged it was "a memory I will always cherish".
Calling his call-up "deserved", Mancini said it was also because "he is the Capocannoniere (top scorer) in Serie A this season".
And after his players kept their unbeaten run in the Euro qualifiers going back nearly 13 years, the former Manchester City boss added: "Mission accomplished. The result was obvious, but it was important that we score goals."
Verratti was similarly delighted that despite being "a young squad, we are on the right track".
The Paris Saint-Germain midfielder, who notched only his second international goal in six years, said: "After failing to qualify for the World Cup, we wanted to bring enthusiasm back to the group and to the fans.
"It's important for a midfielder to score, but in Paris, I have a deeper role and we have so many strikers there lining up to score. I am happy with the goal, though."

Women's team suing US Soccer for gender-pay disparity

Women's team suing US Soccer for gender-pay disparity

NEW YORK • They work just as hard as men for less pay and are told they need to generate as much money as men do if they want to get paid as much as men are paid.
When they say that's essentially impossible without more opportunities and promotion, they are told that opportunity and promotion will happen once they start producing more money.
This is the narrative at the heart of the gender discrimination lawsuit the United States women's national football team filed on Friday against the sport's national governing body, US Soccer.
In nearly every sport, gender disparities in pay and working conditions are rampant.
Coming just three months before the start of the Women's World Cup in France, the litigation immediately became the central plot for the event and highlighted an issue that has increasingly rankled the sports world.
The National Basketball Association's minimum salary of US$1.35 million (S$1.8 million) for a player with one year of experience is higher than the salary cap for an entire Women's NBA roster.
For all the gains that women have made in golf, the disparity in purses between the women of the LPGA Tour and the men of the PGA Tour continues to be striking.
Last year, the women's leading money winner, Thai Ariya Jutanugarn, won three events, including the US Women's Open, but her on-course earnings of US$2.74 million were surpassed by 33 players on the PGA Tour, including 33rd-ranked American Chesson Hadley, who did not record a victory on his way to US$2.76 million.
In tennis, women have pulled closer to pay equality than in any other major sport, with equal pay in the Grand Slams.
But a closer look at the scoreboard each year still shows women in the top 100 generally making only about 80 per cent of the prize money male players make, because of lower pay at other tournaments.
"Unless the origin of the sport is anchored in women, like gymnastics or field hockey, I don't think there's a culture that starts with the premise (that) women are going to be treated equally," said Donna Lopiano, a sports management consultant and former University of Texas athletics administrator.
According to the lawsuit against US Soccer, differing systems of compensation have led to the women repeatedly earning less than their male counterparts, even though the women's team are the world champions while the men failed to reach last year's World Cup in Russia.
And adidas have thrown its weight behind equitable treatment, pledging to pay players it sponsors from the winning Women's World Cup team equal performance bonuses as their male peers.
"We believe in inspiring and enabling the next generation of female athletes, creators and leaders through breaking barriers," the German sportswear giant tweeted the same day the lawsuit was filed.

Football: Wales leave it late to beat Trinidad without Bale

WREXHAM, United Kingdom (AFP) - Wales needed a stoppage-time goal from Liverpool teenager Ben Woodburn to beat Trinidad and Tobago 1-0 in friendly on Wednesday (March 20) after Ryan Giggs left Gareth Bale out of the home side in Wrexham.
Bale was one of several players, including Aaron Ramsey and David Brooks, omitted by Wales manager Giggs just days before the team begin their Euro 2020 qualifying campaign against Slovakia in Cardiff on Sunday.
Trinidad and Tobago are ranked 93rd in the world - 74 places lower than Wales - yet it seemed they might be rewarded with a highly creditable draw at a Racecourse Ground where their manager, Dennis Lawrence, played for Wrexham.
The last match between the two countries had seen Bale become Wales' youngest player at 16 years and 315 days in a victory over Trinidad in Austria in a 2006 friendly.
Bale was not even on the bench on Wednesday, with Giggs protecting his star player ahead of Sunday's match.
Trinidad nearly took the lead when Aubrey David's shot was cleared off the line by Chris Gunter.
But the second minute of stoppage time produced the lone goal when Woodburn chested in a Will Vaulks cross.
Bale, Wales' record goalscorer, completed 90 minutes for the first time in 2019 on Saturday and scored as Spanish giants Real Madrid beat Celta Vigo 2-0 in La Liga.
"We all know what a talent he is, and if he plays games he'll score goals," said Manchester United great Giggs of Bale ahead of Wednesday's match.
"But also I want to take the pressure off him at the same time, so if he's not available we're not just reliant on one player," he added.

Football: Lyon into Champions League last 16 with Shakhtar draw

KIEV (AFP) - Nabil Fekir fired Lyon into the Champions League last 16 after bagging the crucial equaliser in a 1-1 draw against Shakhtar Donetsk in the driving snow in Kiev.
Fekir struck for the away side in the 65th minute to cancel out Junior Moraes' 22nd-minute opener for Shakhtar, who had to win at their temporary home some 700km from Donetsk to leapfrog Lyon into second place in Group F.
Bruno Genesio's Lyon held off Shakhtar, who are playing in the Ukrainian capital after martial law was declared in the east of the country amid tensions with Russia, to keep hold of second spot and a place in the knockout stages, five points behind group winners Manchester City.
It looked for much of the match that Lyon were destined to be knocked out in freezing Kiev, after missing a hatload of chances before Fekir finally curled home the crucial leveller.
Moraes' opener came just three minutes after Lyon missed the best chance of a host of goalscoring opportunities passed up on the night.
Bertrand Traore was slipped through by a superb pass from Houssem Aouar, but faced with Shakhtar keeper Andriy Pyatov, the Burkinabe attacker scuffed his shot into the stopper's trailing foot.
Seconds later Fekir had a shot well saved, and then Moraes struck, collecting a neat pass from Ismaily and sending the fans who made the trip wild with his 18th goal in 25 matches.
Then came more missed chances for Lyon, with Kenny Tete and Traore both shooting over when well placed, before Memphis Depay curled inches wide seven minutes before the break.
Ferland Mendy and Fekir both went close for the visitors in first-half stoppage time, but could not find away past Pyatov.
Fekir had a goal rightly ruled out for offside 10 minutes after the break, but the France international soon had the equaliser that he and his side deserved.
Depay held the ball up well on the right flank and fed his attacking partner, who drifted across the area and whipped home the decisive leveller.
Lyon had conceded in the 83rd minute or later in their previous three Champions League games, dropping points that left them needing a result on Wednesday, and they wobbled as the hosts pressed for a winner in the final minutes.
Anthony Lopes had to charge of his goal to deny Ismaily, snuffing out Shakhtar's last real opportunity of the night and ensuring a place among the Champions League big boys.

Milner wants team to deliver better final ball

Milner wants team to deliver better final ball
LONDON • Following two goal-less draws, Liverpool vice-captain James Milner has urged his team to improve on their finishing by adapting better to the task of breaking down stubborn opponents.
The Reds experienced a frustrating 0-0 draw with Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday, when they could not translate their 65 per cent possession into decent scoring opportunities.
Earlier last week, Jurgen Klopp's men also drew 0-0 at Anfield against German Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich in the first leg of the Champions League last-16 tie.
"When you play for a team like Liverpool and, with the players we've got, you want to win every game no matter who it's against - and we know we can," Milner told Sky Sports ahead of today's Premier League home match against Watford.
"I just don't think we were good enough with our movements, and the final ball at times.
"Around the box, we didn't manage to open them up as much as we would have liked."
Leaders Liverpool are just a point ahead of champions Manchester City (65 points) in the Premier League table before today's round of fixtures, which will see Pep Guardiola's men take on West Ham at the Etihad Stadium.
Reds defender Andy Robertson knows how slim the margins are and has also called on his teammates to start "respecting ourselves" because Liverpool are more than capable of just one win and four draws in their last five matches in all competitions.
"Big teams like Bayern and Manchester United are full of world-class stars and they changed their way of playing to try to stop us," the left-back told the club's website.
"We need to take that as a mark of respect and not shy away from it, stand up to that and show them why there is respect."

And Milner believes the Reds' last two results are proof of how they are coming on under the German boss. "The longer the manager is here, the better we will get," he added. "You can see his style in the team more and more every time we play - that's becoming second nature to the boys.
