Football: Young Boys stun Juventus in Champions League with Hoarau brace

BERN (REUTERS) - Two goals from striker Guillaume Hoarau led Young Boys to a shock 2-1 Champions League win over already-qualified Juventus on Wednesday after Ronaldo missed several chances for the Serie A side and Paulo Dybala had a stoppage-time goal disallowed.
Dybala, who had pulled Juventus back into the game with a goal in the 80th minute, thought he had equalised with a long-range shot, but it was chalked off for offside when Ronaldo leapt at the ball in front of goalkeeper Marco Woelfli but did not make contact.
Juventus finished top of Group H despite the defeat after Manchester United also lost to Valencia. The Swiss side finished bottom despite notching their first-ever win in the Champions League group stage.
Hoarau opened the scoring with a penalty on the half hour and struck again in the 68th minute in a match which will long be remembered by the Swiss club.

No slip-up as City retain title

No slip-up as City retain title

Perhaps it was a fitting finish for two of the most consistent teams in the history of English football.
Liverpool won, but so did Manchester City and Pep Guardiola's team became the first team to retain the Premier League title since Manchester United in 2009.
The final margin of the toughest of title races - City's 98 points to Liverpool's 97 - sounded more like a basketball score, but Pep Guardiola's men held on to their lead.
They defeated Brighton 4-1 to finish the season with 14 consecutive wins - no one else has ever ended in such emphatic fashion - and their fourth league title in seven years.
For Liverpool, the 29-year wait goes on despite their 2-0 win over Wolves.
They finished second for the fifth time since they were last champions in 1990. The third-highest points tally in English football was not enough.
For the Reds, the cruelty lay not just in the numbers but the circumstances.
They were top of the virtual standings for 21 minutes yesterday, a period in which they led and City conceded before scoring twice and going to win in emphatic fashion.
The champions made a nervous start. Brighton had scored only twice in nine games, but Glenn Murray headed in his 15th goal of the season from a corner.
It was the first goal City had conceded in five games and the first time they had been behind in the Premier League since January. But theirs was the response of champions as they trailed for only 83 seconds.

A FIGHT UNTIL THE END
It was the hardest and most satisfying Premier League ever. Liverpool were exceptional this year. We've got an incredible desire to overachieve and we're looking forward to the FA Cup final now.
VINCENT KOMPANY, Man City captain on a gruelling but ultimately rewarding season.

It is the eighth time that the Premier League race has gone down to the final day - and the team who started the day on top have always won the title.
    7
Points City trailed Liverpool until they won 2-1 at the Etihad Stadium on Jan 3 in what remains the Reds' only league defeat this season.

Sergio Aguero has a track record of scoring on the final day, deciding the title in the 94th minute in 2012, and he was quick to level with a typically clinical finish after David Silva flicked Aymeric Laporte's pass into his path.
Riyad Mahrez was a surprise selection for just his fourth league start of this year, but Guardiola's choice was justified.
If City's record signing has been a bit-part player for the second half of the campaign, he repaid much of his £60 million (S$106.3 million) fee with two crucial contributions.
He took the corner that Laporte, previously City's biggest buy, headed in before the Algerian delivered a classy goal himself.
Mahrez's October penalty miss at Anfield had threatened to be the defining moment of his season.
Instead, it may be remembered for the shot that nestled in the top corner at the Amex Stadium in the 63rd minute. Thereafter, Ilkay Gundogan curled in a fourth.
City have 198 points in two seasons, including 55 out of 57 in the first half of 2017-18 and 54 from 57 in the second period of this campaign.
They are remarkable statistics and Guardiola, who won his eighth league title in 10 seasons, has warned they will get even better.
The lead had changed hands 32 times in the title race as City and Liverpool had traded wins.
In a way, it did again as, amid false reports in the crowd that Brighton were 2-0 up, Liverpool led against Wolves when Trent Alexander-Arnold's cross took a deflection off Willy Boly and fell to Sadio Mane.
The same pair combined for the second, Mane, with a hint of offside, heading his 26th goal of the season, 22 in the Premier League.
Perhaps even more remarkably, it was a 13th league assist for right-back Alexander-Arnold, a record for a defender.
Virgil van Dijk headed against the bar, while Wolves' Matt Doherty struck the upright. Alisson saved twice from Diogo Jota as Wolves, the scourge of the elite with six wins against the top six, almost equalised before Mane's second.
It took the winger level with teammate Mohamed Salah and Arsenal's Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in the scoring stakes. It got Liverpool two shares of the Golden Boot, but that was not the silverware they wanted.

Football: Andone header gives Brighton first league win of 2019

BRIGHTON, England (REUTERS) - A 79th-minute header from Florin Andone secured Brighton & Hove Albion's first Premier League win of 2019 as they beat seemingly doomed Huddersfield Town 1-0 to stem their recent slide down the table.
Andone rose to meet Anthony Knockaert's chip to power home from near the penalty spot just when it looked like Brighton's familiar failings in front of goal might again deny them.
Before the game, locally-born world boxing champion Chris Eubank Jr was introduced to the crowd in the hope that he would inspire a fighting performance from a side who had secured just two points since the start of the year.
But Brighton again struggled for a knock-out blow in a lucklustre first half with Iranian Alireza Jahanbakhsh providing the only excitement when his 41st-minute shot fizzed against the bar.
Huddersfield, who beat Wolverhampton Wanderers in midweek, were forced into a change with Aaron Mooy replacing the injured skipper Jonathan Hogg.
The Australian had little chance to shine as Brighton cranked up the pressure after the break with Andone having one effort well saved by Jonas Lossl before he finally beat the keeper for the win that moves Brighton five points clear of the drop zone.
Huddersfield remain adrift at the bottom, 13 points behind 17th-placed Southampton.

Ajax's 'young lions' ready for tough battle in return leg

LONDON • Ajax coach Erik ten Hag praised his "young lions" after the Dutch club moved within touching distance of the Champions League final after a deserved 1-0 win at Tottenham on Tuesday.
Donny van de Beek's well-taken 15th-minute goal put Ajax firmly in the driver's seat against a disappointing Spurs side, who face a tough task to turn around the semi-final in next week's second leg in Amsterdam.
"A fantastic achievement. We fought like lions," ten Hag said.
"We are halfway there and in good shape. The willpower was very nice to see."
Having beaten holders Real Madrid and fellow European giants Juventus on the way to their first Champions League semi-final since 1997, Ajax again showed why so many of their squad are attracting attention from some of the continent's biggest clubs.
Van de Beek was superb and even overshadowed Barcelona-bound midfielder Frenkie de Jong, while 19-year-old captain Matthijs de Ligt showed maturity beyond his years to marshal the defence as Tottenham improved after the break.
Had David Neres not been denied by the post late on, Ajax's position would look impregnable, but ten Hag knows the job is not yet completed.
"I think it's an excellent result for us. We won the game. We are satisfied. We have a very good starting point, but we're only halfway through," he told reporters.
"We can play football in different styles. We can defend very well. We have a team that work together really well; they can fight together really well."

  • 1

  • Only one of the 17 previous teams to lose the first leg at home in a European Cup semi-final have progressed to the final, incidentally Ajax in 1995-96.

The 22-year-old van de Beek said he still expected a tough battle next week at the Johan Cruyff stadium.
"The first 30 minutes were good but we found it tough after that. They changed things up and we had difficulty dealing with that," he said. "The second half was really a battle. It will be a tough game next week but, with our own supporters behind us, it will certainly be a huge boost to reach the final.
"We have to develop a good tactical plan so that we can play like we did in the first 30 minutes (of Tuesday's game)."
Tottenham's suspended forward Son Heung-min is set to be involved in the return leg.
And ten Hag is well aware of the danger the South Korean possesses.
"Of course, he's a very good player," he said, when asked if Son will change the way they approach the second leg.
"When he's not available for Spurs, that's a very big disadvantage for them.
"But, of course, we also have very good players to defend against him, and we will do that."

Football: Liverpool lead again as Man United, Arsenal falter in top four EPL chase

LONDON (AFP) - Liverpool moved back top of the Premier League with a 2-0 win at Cardiff, but Manchester United and Arsenal did little for their chances of Champions League qualification for next season in shock defeats to Everton and Crystal Palace respectively on Sunday.
United were thrashed 4-0 at Everton to continue a miserable run of six defeats from their last eight games.
Arsenal remain fourth, but failed to open up a five-point lead over United as Crystal Palace became the first visiting side to win at the Emirates in the Premier League since Manchester City on the opening weekend of the campaign with an impressive 3-2 victory.
Liverpool suffered no such slip ups to move two points ahead of Manchester City, who still have a game in hand, at the top.
Jurgen Klopp's men have now won their last nine games in all competitions, to also set up a Champions League semi-final against Barcelona.
"It's really massive. We spoke a lot about this game, how special it is, how special the situation is for the opponent," said Klopp, who bemoaned the dry state of Cardiff's pitch under baking temperatures.
"It was not a game for playing around. It was a battle of will, who wants it more." But in keeping with recent weeks, Klopp could not relax until late on as Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah missed big chances to give the visitors a first-half lead.
Georginio Wijnaldum finally broke the deadlock in emphatic fashion with a thumping finish from Trent Alexander-Arnold's corner just before the hour mark.
Liverpool had to survive one major scare when Cardiff captain Sean Morrison failed to connect with his head when it seemed harder to miss with the goal at his mercy 26 minutes from time.
Morrison then compounded his error at the other end when he grappled with Salah inside the area and referee Martin Atkinson pointed to the spot, even though the Egyptian threw himself dramatically to the floor.
James Milner stepped up to bury the resulting penalty and ensure Liverpool are poised to strike if City stumble.

Man United humiliated

Unfortunately, for Klopp's side, United look in no fit state to inflict the blow on the champions they need come the Manchester derby on Wednesday.
Everton celebrated their biggest win over a shambolic Red Devils since 1984 to move up to seventh.
Richarlison's acrobatic effort and a long range effort from Gylfi Sigurdsson inside the first 28 minutes gave Everton the perfect start.
And they struck twice again early in the second-half through Lucas Digne and Theo Walcott.
"From the first whistle everything went wrong," said Solskjaer.
"I just want to apologise to the fans. They're the only people with the badge on today who can hold their heads high, because we can't." And the Norwegian hinted that major changes are to come in the summer whether they reach the Champions League or not.
"We can't change the whole squad, it has to be one step at a time but I said all along, I'm going to be successful here and there are players who won't be part of that successful team."
Arsenal wasted a glorious opportunity to move above north London rivals Tottenham into third as after 10 straight home league wins, Palace shocked the Emirates with the three points that guarantees their survival.
Christian Benteke's first goal for a year put the Eagles in front before Mesut Ozil equalised early in the second half.
However, Shkodran Mustafi's blunder allowed Wilfried Zaha to put Palace back in front before James McArthur took advantage of more woeful Arsenal defending to make it 3-1.
"It's a big frustration because it was a big opportunity. At the set pieces, we didn't work and weren't as strong as we have been," said Arsenal boss Unai Emery.
"Their second goal was very bad for us and took away our confidence." Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang reduced the deficit, but it was too late to stop Palace's first league win at Arsenal since October 1994.

Football: Liverpool and Spurs fans call on sponsors to hand over some Champions League final tickets

LONDON (AFP) - Liverpool and Tottenham fans are calling on sponsors to return a portion of their Champions League ticket allocations, so more supporters can attend next month's all-English final in Madrid.
Both clubs have received around 16,600 tickets apiece for the June 1 meeting at the Wanda Metropolitano, which has a capacity of 63,500 for the final, meaning demand will far outweigh supply.
About 22,300 tickets have been made available to the local organising committee, Uefa and national associations, commercial partners and broadcasters, and to serve the corporate hospitality programme.
Liverpool group Spirit of Shankly (SOS) and the Tottenham Hotspur Supporters' Trust (THST) have asked sponsors to consider giving some of their allocation to fans who will otherwise miss out.
"Spirit of Shankly and Tottenham Hotspur Supporters' Trust - the independent official fan groups of LFC and THFC - are calling on the main sponsors of the Uefa Champions League to return a proportion of the tickets they have received for the Champions League final to the pot for supporters of both clubs," said a joint statement.
"We ask Nissan, PlayStation, Gazprom, PepsiCo, Banco Santander, Mastercard, Heineken and Expedia Group to help redress the balance in the current unfair allocation that means fans of both competing clubs receive less than 25 per cent of available tickets.
"As major sponsors of the Uefa Champions League, your companies appreciate the passion and dedication of the fans who follow their teams and make every game a spectacle."

The statement also called for each sponsor to lobby Uefa to allocate tickets for future finals "on a fairer, more equitable split".
Fans have also seen prices for flights and hotels skyrocket since they both produced remarkable semi-final comebacks last week, Liverpool beating Barcelona and Spurs overcoming Ajax.

Act now on Hazard, Sarri tells Chelsea bosses

Act now on Hazard, Sarri tells Chelsea bosses
LONDON • Maurizio Sarri has made plain his frustration over the contractual stand-off between Eden Hazard and Chelsea by telling the club's hierarchy it is "time to decide" on the winger's future for the good of the club.
The Belgian's deal expires in June 2020 and, despite Chelsea's best efforts since the summer of last year, he has decided against an extension. He has also made no secret of his desire to play for Real Madrid.
The Blues have offered him more than £300,000 (S$520,500) a week. It is unclear what more they could have done but Sarri feels the situation has gone on for too long.
"It's time to decide," the Chelsea manager said. "We have to solve this problem if we want to programme the future."
The Italian has never made his feelings on the issue so clear and his remarks may sit uncomfortably with the club's directors, who were at odds with former manager Antonio Conte over transfer policy.
"Yes, I am a bit surprised (it has gone on this long) but I don't know the past so I can't say anything," the 59-year-old added.
"I am not the president, I am not in charge of the market. I want to speak to him (Hazard) only about the position on the pitch."
Sarri, who will be without Spanish forward Pedro (hamstring injury) for today's Premier League match at Crystal Palace, is also keen to keep Hazard playing as a "false nine" in the absence of the injured Alvaro Morata.
Hazard has said he prefers to play on the wing but Sarri said the impact the Belgian has made with the switch supports his decision.
"He played four matches as false No. 9, scored three goals and had two assists," the manager said.
Hazard boasts a hand in 19 Premier League goals this season, more than any other player, and was again on the scoresheet with a brace in Chelsea's 2-1 win over Watford on Boxing Day.
Speaking ahead of today's game, Palace manager Roy Hodgson said it is "very difficult" to stop the forward when he is at his best.
"He has got all the skills that make him hard to contain," said the 71-year-old, whose side have already beaten champions Manchester City and drawn with Manchester United and Arsenal this season.
"He knows when to release the ball and when to hold it, and when to go for the big prize."

BARCELONA (REUTERS) - Atletico Madrid fell to their heaviest league defeat of the season as they were crushed 3-0 by Espanyol on Saturday (May 4), missing the chance to mathematically guarantee they finish second in La Liga ahead of neighbours Real Madrid.
Espanyol took the lead right before halftime when Atletico captain Diego Godin slid the ball into his own net as he scrambled to clear a cross from 20-year-old left back Adria Pedrosa, who had burst forward from his own area on the break.
The Catalans' top scorer Borja Iglesias doubled the home side's lead early in the second half as they again pounced on the counterattack after an Atletico giveaway, with the striker calmly tucking the ball past Jan Oblak from inside the box.
Espanyol missed several chances to score again but Iglesias deepened Atletico's humiliation by converting from the penalty spot in the 89th minute and also completing his side's biggest league win of the campaign.
Atletico, who have now lost six times this season, are second in the standings on 74 points after 36 matches, nine behind champions Barcelona who play at Celta Vigo later on Saturday, and nine ahead of Real, who host Villarreal on Sunday.
Espanyol climbed up to eighth with 47 points.
Atletico midfielder Koke fiercely criticised his side for their limp display, particularly in the second half.
"This performance is not fitting of Atletico, this was not what we are about, We weren't ourselves at any point in the game," he told reporters.
"They were far better than us in the second half, they were superior in every aspect, you cannot explain it any other way.
"The game was a real struggle for us, they played some great football and we had some good moments in the first half but didn't take advantage. We really lacked intensity in the second half and the way we conceded the second goal was awful."

LIVERPOOL, England (REUTERS) - Liverpool rediscovered their swagger and stayed top of the Premier League with a thrilling 5-0 win over Watford that was powered by two goals apiece from Sadio Mane and Virgil van Dijk on Wednesday (Feb 27).
Senegalese striker Sane leapt between defenders to head a close-range ninth minute goal after a sumptuous cross from Liverpool's marauding right back Trent Alexander-Arnold, who provided three assists on the night.
In the 20th minute, Sane received another pass in the box from Alexander-Arnold, first appearing to lose control of the ball before cheekily back-heeling it into the net past Watford keeper Ben Foster.
Belgian forward Divock Origi made it 3-0 in the 66th minute, cutting into the box from the left wing before firing past Foster at his near post. Dutch defender van Dijk headed in the fourth and fifth goals late on as Watford were swept aside.
Liverpool, who had failed to score in their last two games against Bayern Munich in the Champions League and Manchester United in the Premier League, could have bagged even more as Egyptian striker Mohamed Salah also ran Watford ragged.
The result kept Liverpool top of the Premier League on 69 points, just ahead of Manchester City on 68 points after the champions' 1-0 win over West Ham on Wednesday.
Manager Juergen Klopp looked delighted that his team, who had drawn three out of their last four league games to allow City back into the race, had found their fluency and intensity again against the Hornets.

Liverpool fans in Singapore, like their counterparts around the world, were left breathless and in awe of the Reds' comeback against Barcelona in their Champions League semi-final on Tuesday.
For civil servant Rudie Imran Masih, 42, the 4-0 win at Anfield was a collective effort.
"(Goalkeeper) Alisson was a wall, but the whole team were awesome," he said yesterday.
"Their fitness levels were unbelievable, their pressing was relentless, and they didn't allow Barca to get into their passing rhythm. Everyone played out of their skins."
Philippe Aw, head coach of Singapore's Under-15 football team, described the result as "unbelievable and amazing". A Reds supporter since 1983, he said Barca's left-back Jordi Alba was at fault for the first two goals and the timing of them (in the seventh and 54th minute) were psychological blows for the Spanish side.
Speaker of Parliament Tan Chuan-Jin also chimed in to express his admiration for the Merseyside club. He posted on Facebook: "It's really a lesson for life isn't it? Just keep going and never give up. Teamwork. Heart. Resilience. And sometimes it just works out."
Some local restaurants were also swept up in the celebrations.
Springleaf Prata Place and Casuarina Curry both offered free pratas at their outlets to customers who showed up yesterday in a Liverpool jersey.
International sports stars and Liverpool supporters were equally thrilled. Former women's world No. 1 tennis player Caroline Wozniacki tweeted: "Wow!!!!! No words!!! What a game!!!! Incredible!!! #ynwa" while American basketball great LeBron James wrote on Twitter: "AMAZING NIGHT FOR THE REDS. WOW #YNWA".

BOOST
To overturn a 3-0 deficit against a team like Barcelona will give them confidence to do it.
PHILIPPE AW, Singapore's Under-15 head coach, believes that the Reds can go on to win the Champions League.

For former Liverpool striker Robbie Fowler, this was a match to remember. He told BT Sport: "When you talk about the great nights, this is the best ever.
"Before the game, we were talking about all the superlatives we have for (Lionel) Messi. We can run out of superlatives for Liverpool. It was deserved as well and that's the best thing about it."
Liverpool will face either fellow Premier League side Tottenham or Dutch team Ajax Amsterdam in the final on June 1 in Madrid.
Aw said the five-time European champions will be favourites.
He added: "First as a fan, and also as a coach, I think they can go all the way.
"To overturn a 3-0 deficit against a team like Barcelona will give them confidence to do it."

It is alleged that the 22-year-old Ali and 21-year-old Al-Rawi have not met the residency requirements to be eligible. Qatar claimed that they have relatives born in the country which allows them to play, which the UAE disputes.
Ali scored his record-equalling eighth goal of the tournament when Qatar beat the UAE 4-0 in the semi-finals on Tuesday. Al-Rawi was suspended for that match but is expected to return for the final.
The Asian Football Confederation confirmed that it has received a protest from the UAE Football Association regarding two players and that it would be "reviewed in line with the AFC regulations".
Spaniard Sanchez, however, said that his players were focused on preparing for today's match at Zayed Sports City Stadium.
"We are only focused on the game we're going to play tomorrow, any other things not related to football is not in our minds at the moment. I'm not concerned at all," he said. "My players need no more motivation than to play an Asian Cup final."
The protest comes against a background of a political and economic boycott of Qatar which the UAE launched with Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and Egypt in 2017. The four countries accuse Qatar of supporting terrorism, which it denies.

FOCUSED ON FINAL
We are only focused on the game we're going to play tomorrow, any other things not related to football is not in our minds at the moment.
FELIX SANCHEZ, Qatar coach, on his team's mentality as they approach today's Asian Cup final against Japan.

The political rift was manifest in Abu Dhabi on Tuesday when Emirati fans hurled sandals and drinks bottles at Ali and two other players celebrating their goals during the semi-final.
The rift also means that almost no Qatari fans or media have been in the UAE to support and report on their run to a first continental final.
Meanwhile, Japan captain Maya Yoshida called on tournament organisers to deal swiftly with incidents of "stupidity" that risk damaging the reputation of Asian football.
The Asian Cup has seen its share of controversial refereeing decisions, with host UAE twice awarded soft late penalties that left rivals players and coaches fuming.
Japan's semi-final victory over Iran also came close to boiling over, with Yoshida himself needing to be restrained by teammates after reacting furiously to a petulant slap from Sardar Azmoun.
"I think the AFC should control stuff about penalties and suspensions," said the Southampton defender yesterday.
"If (the Cup) is broadcast all over the world, you don't want to see any stupid things, especially after the game. We are representing Asia under the hashtag #bringingasiatogether, so it's important to represent Asia by playing good football and with fair play."
Japan enter the final as favourites to add to their record of four Asian Cup titles, but Qatar coach Sanchez insisted that the 2022 World Cup hosts were confident ahead of their first appearance in the final, after comfortably winning all six of their matches and keeping a record six clean sheets.
"To us, it's no surprise that we are in the final," he said. "I have full trust in the players, they are motivated to make history."

MADRID (REUTERS) - Holders Real Madrid were sensationally knocked out of the Champions League on Tuesday (March 5) after being thrashed 4-1 at home by an outstanding Ajax Amsterdam who overturned a first-leg deficit to reach the quarter-finals 5-3 on aggregate.
Moroccan midfielder Hakim Ziyech fired Ajax into a shock seventh-minute lead after a lay off from the outstanding Dusan Tadic, who also provided the pass for David Neres to double the Dutch side's advantage in the 18th.
Madrid, who were missing inspirational captain Sergio Ramos through suspension and hit the woodwork twice in the first half, came out stronger after the interval but were dealt a fatal blow when Serbia international Tadic crowned his sensational display by hammering into the top corner in the 62nd minute.
Substitute Marco Asensio gave Madrid a glimmer of hope by striking back but it was quickly extinguished by a breathtaking free kick from Lasse Schone, condemning Real to a fourth consecutive home defeat in all competitions.
Things got worse for the hosts, who had won the last three Champions League titles in a row, when Nacho was sent off in stoppage time for two bookings.
Ajax, who have won the trophy four times, most recently in 1995, reached the last eight of Europe's top competition for the first time since 2003.
Thirteen-times winners Madrid, who have lifted the trophy in four of the last five years, and had reached at least the semi-finals for the last eight seasons, suffered their earliest elimination since 2010.
Madrid, who had suffered consecutive home defeats to Barcelona in the run up to the game and are an embarrassing 12 points behind the Catalans in La Liga, endured rotten fortune throughout the game, losing Lucas Vazquez and livewire Brazilian teenager Vinicius Junior to injury in the first half.
The night could have gone very differently had Madrid defender Raphael Varane headed under the crossbar instead of against it in the fifth minute, moments before Ziyech scored.
Ajax had Madrid on the ropes after the second goal and should have further increased their advantage, as Neres chipped wide when clean through against Madrid keeper Thibaut Courtois.
The Belgian later leapt across his goal to parry a shot from Ziyech, and used his body to thwart Tadic.
He made some more impressive saves in the second half but was powerless to stop Tadic's thunderbolt and was caught out by Schone's free kick, which looked to be a cross but went straight in.
Real substitute Gareth Bale blasted against the near post in the first half and suffered a painful end to the match. The Wales forward was forced to stay on the pitch after appearing to injure his ankle late on as coach Santiago Solari had used all three substitutes.

Football: Pele back in Brazil after hospital stay in France

SAO PAULO (AFP) - Pele arrived back in Brazil on Tuesday (April 9) after having surgery for a "severe urinary infection" during a six-day hospital stay in France that revived fears about the three-time World Cup winner's state of health.
The 78-year-old, who is widely considered to be the greatest footballer in history, was discharged late Monday from the private American hospital in the Paris suburbs where he had been taken after falling ill following an appearance at a promotional event with France striker Kylian Mbappe.
After arriving at the Sao Paulo-Guarulhos airport in Brazil, Pele was taken through a gaggle of reporters at the terminal in a wheelchair and was driven away in a van.
"Once again, thank God, everything went well. I'm alive. Long live Brazil," said Pele, a gold cross hanging around his neck, after he arrived in Brazil's biggest city.
"I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the Brazilians and all those who called the hospital, who called me, for my operation, to wish me a rapid recovery," he added.
He also thanked the hospital for his treatment, saying: "France not only has great footballers, it also has very good doctors."

NEYMAR VISIT

In a statement on Monday on the Globoesporte.com site, Pele said he had required "medical assistance and surgery" for a "severe urinary infection."
Before he was discharged, current Brazil star Neymar, who plays alongside Mbappe for Paris Saint-Germain, paid him a visit at the hospital.

Neymar posted a photo on his Instagram account Monday of himself next to a smiling Pele in his hospital bed with the two holding hands.
Brazil's G1 reported that Pele had intended to come out of hospital on Saturday to return to his home country, but had been delayed because he had to undergo further tests.
The urinary tract infection was not serious and was under control, members of Pele's entourage had said.
Pele, who won the World Cup with Brazil in 1958, 1962 and perhaps most memorably in Mexico in 1970 when his swashbuckling team re-defined modern football, has had several health scares in recent years.
A similar urinary infection put him in intensive care in November 2014.
In 2016, Pele, who played 1,363 professional matches, scoring 1,281 goals, turned down the chance to light the flame at the Rio Olympics because he had undergone hip surgery earlier that year and was suffering from muscle pains.
In 2017, he appeared at the draw in Moscow for the World Cup in Russia but was in a wheelchair on that occasion too.
In January 2018, he cancelled a trip to London fearing a "stressful" and "tiring" journey.
At the event for a sponsor in Paris, Pele remained sitting throughout his meeting with Mbappe - the two men are the only teenagers to have scored in a World Cup final.

ABU DHABI (AFP) - Asia's football body dismissed a protest claiming that two Qatari players, including Asian Cup top scorer Almoez Ali, were ineligible to play just hours before the final on Friday (Feb 1).
The decision, which follows a protest lodged by tournament hosts the United Arab Emirates, was announced as Qatar prepared to take the field against Japan in Abu Dhabi.
"The Asian Football Confederation disciplinary and ethics committee today dismissed the protest lodged by the United Arab Emirates Football Association over the eligibility of two Qatar players," an AFC statement said.
No details were given about the reasons for the protest or the dismissal. Ali, 22, who has a record-equalling eight goals in the tournament, was born in Sudan, while defender Bassam Al-Rawi, 21, was born in Iraq.
The UAE made its protest after the home side were thrashed by Qatar, their arch-rivals,4-0 in a stormy semi-final that saw the winning team pelted with shoes and plastic bottles.
According to the AFC's Disciplinary and Ethics Code, teams who field an ineligible player can be made to forfeit the match in question and pay a fine.
Ali has played in all six games of Qatar's run to their first Asian Cup final, matching the record held by Iranian legend Ali Daei with his eight goals so far.
Both players were named in Qatar's starting line-up for the final at Abu Dhabi's Zayed Sports City Stadium against the four-time champions.
